How does this spec look to you guys? I'm currently running a P4 3.0ghz + 4GB and ATI X850gto, I'm in dire need of an upgrade LOL.

I'll be using the system mostly for games and a little home video editing > DVD.
Monitor, OS and optical drive are already sourced.

I went for psu/cooler as I'm hoping the system will be relatively quiet but I will give it a go to unlock the cores and OC only modestly, if at all.

to be honest m8 i would hold out a bit and get another £100 - £200 together and then splash out on either an i5 or Phenom II x4 system. im not saying what you have picked is bad its just that for that little bit extra you can have something truly special :)

I agree with that, but since I'm on a tight budget I'd have to wait for prices to come down on the Phenom II x4 a lot.
I have a strong urge not to buy in to any multicores under 3ghz, I have the impression that 2.6 cores are actually going to be a performance hit. Not having built any systems since 2003 I'm used to "more clock speed = better". I'm still trying to get my head around these newfangled cpus ;) and how they'd compare in real terms to the single core I've been running on

Edit: Swapped Mobo for Asus M4A79XTD Evo for unlocking potential.

I know what you mean :)
only a few weeks back i ordered a build but was unsure what to go for (amd / intel)

after a lot of thinking i went with this AMD build and have been very happy with it.

You can shave a few things off that as i already had a 700w psu and x2 hard drives but aside from that it was a total rebuild.

The PhenomII x2 550 BE is a great processor.. and it "can" be unlocked to become a Quad Core with a bios update + a few tweaks.

This is all chance based but from what ive read ( and what ive done, bought the 550BE and the MA770-UD3 and unlocked in seconds, stable as you like ) its like 80% of getting the cores unlocked and stable.

So, your Mobo / Proc is a nice combination ;)
