Hi folks,

any chance you could recommend a cpu and some ram for a person who edits videos and images with memory/cpu intensive software?

This person also has quite a lot going on when he's working on that kind of stuff. For example he may have winamp playing in the background, an ftp client running, downloading torrents, etc...

He is using an old Pentium 4 processor and has something like 2gb of DDR2 5300 ram.

He also wants to know if he should upgrade to Vista from XP.

Oh, he has an Asus P5Q Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard just so you know what he can and can't attach to it.

His budget would be about £230-ish.

Thanks for your time.

i'd suggest a Q6600 and as much DDR2 PC-6400 as the budget will allow :)

<edit>

yeah, a Q6600 (£155.24) and two sets of OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C5 Dual Channel Vista Gold Series DDR2 (£72.42) comes to a nice £227.67
