Hello :)

A friend of mine is looking to get a Laptop which he is mainly going to be using for gaming.
He has a budget of £1000

He was looking at the alienware ones (something like £1500) and he was willing to pay out this i think.

so please could you spec me a good gaming laptop.

Games he will be playing will be like W.O.W, bf2, css, cod4 !, so most new games.

Thanks a lot.

lol , sucks dont it when you dont get a response ;)

The best gaming laptop in my eyes at the moment is the Alienware m15x (which I think is the one your mate is looking at) plus its a 15" screen, which I want.

But for a laptop that is under £1000 and would play games pretty good would be the dell xps m1530 for £800 ish (depending on spec) with the 8600gt card in it. Plays COD4 , WOW and stuff fine. :)

Problem with a 17"+ is A) They're harder to drive as they're typically higher resolution, and also if you have to lower settings at a later date, you'll notice it more on a larger screen!

well mine is 1920x1200 and i rarely game at that resolution. No problems at all.

he wants a gaming laptop so that means a top specced laptop.

harder to drive?

Really no point in spending that much. Look at Rock who probably do the fastest one I know of as it uses desktop CPUS not laptop ones and is about 2-3K, or the Dell 1730 with the 8800SLI.

Alienware are an option to but they dont really have anythign available over here with the same grunt as Dell (main part) or Rock.

Probably because they cost so much in general that they almost price themselves out the market except for extreme enthusiasts/people who want premium performance on the move/out and out geeks who are willing to pay the prices, besides if you're looking extreme performance, stuff like the SL8 series isnt exactly extremely portable - over 5kg, so its not quite the sort of laptop stuff most people imagine.

I'm also looking at a new laptop (my current 8 year old Acer 506t screen is cracking at the hinges so I can't close the screen anymore).

After looking around for a couple of weeks, this is what I'm looking at getting. Its not state of the art granted, but it'll play CS Source and DOD (so the reviews say) and should be ok for BF2. And more importantly, its only £600. Money is a major factor, and I can't see anything as good as this for the money, even though its looks will take some getting used to. Looks a bit Fisher Price to me. But big hard drive, lots of RAM, Dolby sound and a 8600 with 256 meg sounds good to me.

Have you checked out the Vostro 1500/1700? I just paid £551 for Vostro 1500 / C2D 2.4 / 3GB / 250 GB / 8600M GT 256mb / 1440*900 screen / 6 cell etc.

So there I was, all decided on what laptop to get, and now Fish99 has got me all confused again. Went to the Dell website and those Vostros are very nice, very customisable and very cheap.....and I can even select win xp!!
Very very tempting and very very good. Thanks fish:)
