My i7-2600k has lasted so long that I know nothing about new cpus (or mobos) anymore and have no idea which one to base a new system on (broadwell, haswell, skylake? 6 cores!?) – for Gaming/VR @1440p.

Samsung SSD 500Gb (or 2) + big storage drive (or 2).

32GB ram + Windows 10

High-end gpu but not the overpriced Nvidia one, AMD is usually better value isn’t it? Like most of the performance for less price works for me as long as it plays 1440p. Any recommendations?

Trying to keep it under £2k. I already have a 1440p monitor, Vive, kb, mouse, 5.1 speakers etc.

I’ve basically been gaming for the last few years and haven’t had to research much as my current OCUK system has defied the ravages of time! I want another system that will last a few years.

Also, I can wait a few months if anything worthwhile is coming out then – is there anything expected, cpu/mobo/gpu –wise if it is better to wait?

Thank you.

Hey there

Yes AMD usually is better value for money, if you want to keep the budget down as much as possible I'd probably suggest either the 1060/70 or if you did want to go for AMD an RX 470/480 with the RX 480 and 1060 performing roughly the same.

With a budget of £2k you could get an i7 6700k with at least a 1070 or 1080 though.

Are you looking for us to build this system for you?

Tell us about other factors - size, noise, etc. Are you going to transfer any of your current drives?

Given your interest in VR, read this and avoid AMD and don't go below a GTX 1070.

Your current build (in sig) says it has a Fury GPU in it. If you're staying with AMD (which makes sense based on the monitor in your sig being Freesync), then you're not going to get much better than that card for the minute. Unless you want 8GB VRAM.

Yes please, I just haven't got time for fiddling with headers anymore. What sort of mobo would you recommend?

Good point on the noise, the quieter the better although honestly I don't mind normal noise under load as I will never notice it while gaming.

Yes I will probably stay with the FreeSync monitor unless I decide to get a curved monitor, although I had heard there were issues with them gaming. Any chance of a successor to the Fury in the next while?

Looking at your spec I would keep what I have. Buy some faster memory (2133) a PCIE SSD (something like the 480gb Intel) and a Titan XP.

You will gain far more from that than replacing all of it and using a 1080, IMO.

X2 and a Titan XP from you know who.

That is a really bad way to spend the money.

First off buying new ram probably won't make any difference.

The Intel pci-e ssd is a massive luxury for a gaming pc. A Samsung 850 EVO is more than enough.

Also no need to spend £1099 on a gpu for a 1440p monitor. A GTX 1070 would be more than fine.

The ram makes a huge difference. Look on Digital Foundry, it really benefits newer games.

The 1070 is just about good enough for maxing out games now (I know I have a Titan X Maxwell) a Titan XP would last years.

I really just don't see what else is worth changing.

Ram speed can make a difference with skylake. The op has a Sandybridge cpu though.

Not sure what games you are playing, but a GTX 1070 is perfect for 1440p. If he wanted to go overboard he could buy the GTX 1080.

As for the Pascal Titan X, the upcoming 1080 ti will be far better value and perform just as well, if the 980 ti/old Titan X is anything to go off.
