Hello,

Friend of mine is sending his son off to uni.

We're trying to put together a PC for him on the cheap.

his course will involve some 3d modelling (beleive 3DS max) and Unreal 3 engine game coding, and obviously I'd like him to be able to game reasonably.

We need to get him a screen too, so it'll most likely be 1920x1080 res.

Currently we're sticking at GPU.

I've donated a Q6600 with motherboard and 4Gb of DDR2, so that's the base system.

His dad has been eyeing the HD4850, but I'm loathe to recommend old tech when there may be better options at the same price.

So, for the listed applications and resolution, what GPU would you recommend with a sub-£100 budget? What about if I can shave off some money elsewhere to bump it to £120? Any UK online retailer (though I of course will recommend OCUK).

you will need to overclock that cpu so it doesn't get limited by it.

id say a nice gtx 460 would fit in the budget, would have to be second hand probably. but you would have some money left over.

anything more powerful will be limited by the cpu imo

I honestly hadn't considered Nvidia... My brain's still stuck in HD4850/HD5850 times, when low-cost performance = AMD and high end grunt = Nvidia. I'll check out some GTX460's, thanks.

well im sure someone from the red side will be along soon to chip in (im not clued up on ati), but i had a 460 and it served me well, so its a recommendation based on that.
