as title, i'm looking for a psu for my friend but he's on a budget.
needs to be atx
the system it will be running is:
- amd pheneom 8450
- 3 gigs ram
- 320gb
- vista
- 8600gt

he's looking to upgrade the gfx card in the near future so needs to be above the current systems needs.

he's looking to spend like £35 or £40, he refuses to pay much for a psu :(

second to kennys' response. tell him to revise his outlook on something as critical as a PSU. nothing against the item kenny advised but if he is updating his gpu then why go shabby on a PSU?

realistically he needs to spend £50+ upwards esp if he wants to upgrade his GPU. if he is strapped on cash tell him to go a few models down in GPU and add the saved cash onto the PSU budget because its not worth spending any amount of money on a half decent GPU and powering it with a horse and cart which has a tendancy to either fail horribly or explode (or in a worse case scenario, both :D). Of course that all depends if the 850W @ a 10er has enough Amps to power any kind of GPU upward of an 8500gt???

Yep he'll need to budget £50-60 to match the components he has and for the new graphics card (assuming it will be quite a reasonable one).

If he drove a Ferrari, would he buy the cheapest tyres for it..? I don't think he understands how important the PSU is..

personally i say let him learn the hard way, spec him a q-tec or hyper type R 580W, both have a reputation for going bang

The Gigabyte Odin range may suit his needs, they haven't achieved the price their performance would suggest as they are quite new to the market, get one while they're hot.

£10 for a 400 watt *cough* 850 watt psu, there should be a law against the sale of stuff like that.!

but he really shouldt go cheap on a psu, its one of, if not the most critical peice of hardware in a system that you must choose carefully.

im sure my suggestion will do fine even if he plans an upgrade, how substancial will his upgrade be if he is like this with buying a psu lol

or buy him a firework....
I think that 10€ "850W" PSU is one...
which hopefully takes also other stuff to grave so that there might be at least one little wiser people on this rock.
(generally experience can teach something... although human specie has strong tendency to avoid learning anything)

Maybe exceeding even earth shattering 150W peak draw.
Single high end card could increase that by ~100W.

If he's committed to not spending much he could go with one of the Silver Powers and still get a reasonably decent power supply. For some reason they are listed as Seasonic products though on the OcUK site, which is odd as they are the budget brand offered by the same company who own Tagan.

If that's all he's running, a good quality 400W would be ample, even allowing SLI with another 8600gt, or a single performance GPU.

Heh :D
