As title, Prefered to avoid sempron& celeron cpu's.
Not a quid more as 450.
Any suggestions?
Will be used for home stuff & occasional game.

You can get a CoreDuo for £450, if you check out the HP business range, such as the HP530. But with the budget, you won't get fantastic gaming out of any of the laptops. The Samsung R20 are nicer, probably slightly above budget, but you could get one with a T2250 CoreDuo (1.73Ghz) and 1GB RAM with 80GB hard drive.

It's not for me, and yes new preffered.
Told him to look @ ispiron 6400, only thing that could be better is gfx, he'd like to be able to play oldish games, ie bf1942, perhaps even hl2?

That's the best bet. A X1400 managed to handle CNC3 (everthing on low settings) @ 1024x768 pretty ok. :p Dell's pretty good value for laptops - they may not look astounding or be of great build quality but it often does what you expect it to.

Problem the x1400 is an adidtional 140 €, making it 100€ over budget, any better options :( ? The standard gfx are intel GMA...

Well.... for the budget, it really is just that or the GeForce 7300. Not outstanding, but can be had for less than the X1400. There's also going the AMD route with a GeForce 6100... i.e Asus F3M.
