A friend has asked me to build him a machine to do some video editing. I don't know juts what but I doubt it is very serious stuff. we have a budget of £500 that is going to have to include an OS - he would like Windows 7. What would work for that budget?

Thanks for any help.

You could get away with that, that has a small SSD as well for the files being worked on, the video editing software and that's about it (it's quite small but better than nothing!)

or AMD (which will require a GPU as it has no integrated graphics)

but no SSD, the likelihood is that the extra cores will render stuff quicker, and he will get extra speed from being able to GPU render using CUDA acceleration
It's not a very powerful GPU though, so if you could pick up something like a GTX 660 or 660Ti used off the MM or so then that would be a better choice
Intel does have the better upgrade route though
I would also recommend Win8.1 because it's a bit faster overall and cheaper, though obviously if he wants 7 then go for it

Also £3 more can get you the 550W version of the PSU - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-236-AN&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=2463
