Basically my mate is after a new PC for around £1000 that he primarily wants to use for gaming, and to include an X2, Nvidia 7800/7900, a large hard drive to store his music collection (200-250gb).

Hopefully that'll give you some indication of what he wants..

Thats a good spec, but I think a Crossfire mobo would be a better choice ;)

See edit :D

I heard people were having problems with the crossfire boards, not sure if they're ok now. I'm sure someone can shed some light. :)

Both are great specs! Dont think you can go wrong with either.
The opteron CPU's do seem to overclock better but the X2 4400+ is a decent overclocker too.
As said if not overclocking (or mildly overclocking) the X2 4400+ is likely the better choice.
The X1900XT/XTX cards (7900GTX speeds) are fantastically priced & best bang per buck at present.
