hi guys. i want to up grade from my e6600. i really dont want to back down the intel road. my pc will be for a bit everything including the odd game. i have a 6870 be. i have loads of old spares so all i need is a cpu, ram and mobo.

i was thinking bulldozer, asus board and 4 gb ram. does that sounds ok?

thanks everyone.

When you say lots of old spares,

Got any SATA harddrives/DVD drives?

Got a Case (does it take ATX sized boards?)

Got a PSU?

Got a 32 or 64bit OS?

yes, yes, yes and yes. ive got loads from other older machines. ill use my old case its got a decent psu, its big so atx isnt a prob, loads of sata hd, ide and sata optical drives.

os ive got them all. do you prefer 64 bit?

and if i could get closer to £200 that would be great.

thanks.

AMD bulldozer FX suck,

A 64bit OS means you can use the 8GB RAM.

The board has a UK 3 year warranty based in Milton Keynes,

Ivybridge ready as well - http://www.gigabyte.us/press-center/news-page.aspx?nid=1048

They roughly match up to Sandy Bridge as far as raw processing power goes. They use way more energy, nothing like as efficient. They don't overclock as well.

The raw processing power they have doesn't address to games as well as Sandy Bridge does, they have too many cores and not enough power behind each. If games were multi-threaded then the difference would be much less stark.

I've always been AMD but sadly they don't bring much to the table. Sandy Bridge (and soon Ivy Bridge) are a much better proposition.

You're better off with Sandy Bridge, but it's not as if Bulldozer is terrible.. it's just second place, soundly beaten.

thats a bummer. i thought you guys were getting commision from intel, lol.

Hardly :) Edit : Although Stulid might be on comission from Gigabyte!

It's not a good thing though because when AMD and Intel are beating each other when they release new processors then processing power races forward. Now that AMD can't catch Intel, Intel has already taken the foot off the gas and instead of greatly increased processing power, we're just seeing more efficient (less electricity/heat) processors and better profit margins for Intel.

Edit : The spec that Stulid has recommended is ideal, it's about the sweet spot for bang for buck, you can't go wrong with it really, unless you could find the money to go up to a 2500K rather than the 2120.

Actually you dont need the aftermarke theatsink and can overclock the i5 2500K to 4ghz with the stock supplied cooler.
