Spec based on a ready built PC?

Hi there,

This might seem like a strange thing to ask, but I don't think it is.

My Dad has asked me to look at putting together a spec and building a new PC for him. I wasn't sure what to put together, so I thought I'd look at an internet PC company.

I was wondering if it was possible to build a very similar PC or as close as possible based on the PC from them, basically I want to see if it is cheaper to source the components myself or just buy the PC?

Is it possible?

Regards,

Andrew

It will definently be cheaper to source the components yourself rather than buying one from that place beginning with the letter D. It's a bit tricky to judge how much that system you linked is worth exactly as there is no details of the mobo, PSU etc etc, though i'm sure someone on here could spec you a much better system for than you would get from there.

-Doug.

EDIT: removing competitor name :p

Get rid of competitor! Seriously.

And anyway, what does he want the PC for? Gaming, or just internet / office use. In which case, you dont need to spend that much.
You will get a much better quality of PC for the cash than you ever would buying from there!

What is he going to do:

Gaming.
Internet/Office
Photoshop/Video editing.

What do you need:

Base Unit.
Monitor.
Peripherals.

Then we can put together a spec. For a much better price than *they* ever could.

Hi,

Sorry for this, I will but are you refering to the link or the name?

Andrew

He wants it for a bit of everything, which I know may not help, although gaming would be secondary, unless my brother has anything to do with it :)

No doubt he would prefer to have come in at under £1000, lets say £500 - £750 all in?

Andrew

Looks good, thanks.

I notice that nobody ever appears to include an OS?

I'd like to give him a couple of options if possible e.g. £600, £700, £800 & £900.

Andrew

Similar to RJC's AMD build though it includes a quad-core and a bigger HDD (may not be needed though it will give your dad some more to choose from :)). I haven't included a monitor or keyboard/mouse. I would recommend using the Win7 RC for now and preordering a retail version for around £45-50.

-Doug. :)

You're allowed to mention Dell by name, just not post links to the system config pages on their website.

Dell are great for low-end PCs and the value for money in that respect is often very good, but if you've got a bigger budget it tends to work out cheaper to build one. Worth comparing them though, because sometimes they do special offers and discoutns which can bring the prices down quite a bit.

I started buildin PCs almost a year ago because Dell put such a radiculous mark-up on their kit and wouldnt offer anything but Vista, dont think they pose any threat to OcUK.
Built 9 PCs since sourcing the components from OcUK.

Depends what you're after really. I'd always build my own PCs because as you say, the mar-up on higher-end kit (especially PCs for gaming) are huge, but their low-end systems are often very cheap. Got my Mum a slimline dual-core AMD PC with 20" monitor for £350, no way was I going to be able to build her one for the same money!
