spec build advice for rendering pc

Hi, i have a friend wanting me to build a pc for him so he can do some rendering for his course. main program used will be vue 9 xtreme/3d studio max.

got about 2k budget, if spending more means a real increase in power i.e i7 to dual xeon then so be it but need to confirm first!!!

why is the gen 3 motherboard better than the workstation board, the pc will be on for long periods of time!
monitor isnt so important but if can get in budget then bonus!
case should be plain not gaming case with lights
 
those cases are nice!
i originally went for the workstation board as it can take 32gb ram and for rendering more ram is better so i am told!
