Using this mainly for work in Maya/Photoshop plus some gaming. Got my monitors/keyboard/mouse already.

I don't normally upgrade all that often hence am spending big and hoping it lasts me long enough. My current rig has lasted me 4-5 years!! My main issue is if it all fits/works together. Otherwise any money saving suggestions are welcome :)

Thanks.

point to note, my system from ocuk arrived yesterday in that case, an its bloody massive, its taller than my 32" LCD Tele/Monitor, probaly about 2 and a bit ft high and the same again depth wise, just thought i would let you know, just incase you were after something of a more regular size.

Personally I'd go with an overclocked Q6600, a P5Q and a Spinpoint F1 drive. That'd save you quite a bit. Also I think you could get away with a much cheaper PSU.

Yeah, £140 is pretty steep for 850W.

Also, do you really need an X48 board? Are you planning to use Crossfire? If not, you can get a P45 board for much much less. I agree that an overclocked Q6600 would be a better choice as well. It's perfectly adequate.

What about two Samsung F1 750GBs as well? Shave a few pounds off and they're just as, if not faster, than those Western Digital drives.

Case is down to personal choice. If you want to spend that much, that's fine. It's a great case. You can get away perfectly fine with a cheaper case though, such as an Antec 1200 or that new Coolermaster HAF 132.

Corsair HX520/similar Enermax Modu82/Pro82 would be enough.
Like said X48 motherboards are just needlessly costly compared to P45 motherboards.

And if you're after quite PC that case doesn't have much quiet design. (+that Enermax is noisy)

Yorkfield is faster clock to clock compared to Kentsfield (and also overclocks) so performance wise Q9550 is superior choise compared to old hotter Q6600.

Depends what he's upgrading from.

The price difference between the Q9550 and the Q6600 isn't great enough to warrant the extra £130~ that is costs, which is exactly what those articles show.

Overclock the Q6600 to 3Ghz+ and you're laughing for the £100~ it can be gotten for.

However, if he wants to splash out on the Q9550, then by all means. He'll have a fast chip that'll handle everything around. That said, if he had bought the Q6600, he would have been equally impressed.

Just my two cents. £130 extra on a slightly faster processor doesn't really make financial sense to me.

I upgraded to what you see in my signature for pretty much the same stuff. I'm using AutoCad and 3D studio and all in cost £1300 including windows monitor keyboard but it depends if you need that stuff as well?

EDIT: so prob knock off about 200 quid for the stuff I listerd above for the hardware costs.

Yea I've spent lots on keyboard/mouse/monitors already.
Very happy with my 24" HP LP2475w.

I might change the PSU and also cut down on ram since 8 gig might be overkill. Will decide by tonight. Thanks for the feedback.
