Hi. My friend did set up a computer for me and this is what he came up with.

basket.jpg

Basically its the same system he bought only with a better graphics card and different memory cards.
Ive done some research here on the forums and it seems like a good setup but there could always be something hes missed.
He easily overclocked his cpu to 3.2mghz and is very happy with it, also the graphics card seems great.
I dont really know about the memory card though, How big role does the cas play? the ones ive chosen has 5-5-5-18. But i can get:
2x "OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-6400 Dual Channel Platinum Revision"
at roughly the same price though they run at 4-4-4-15. (im presuming lower numbers are better).
Also the "Team Xtreem 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C3 800MHz Dual Channel Kit (TXDD2048M800HC3DC)"
costs as much as my 4gb only the numbers look way better (3-3-3-8). is it better to have lower cas than more memory?

The computer is primarily going to be used for demanding 3D apps such as Zbrush and Mudbox but i also want to be able to play latest games at very high settings ... perhaps the whole setup is wrong for its purpose? Oh and also noticed most people go with a vista version for their setup, i guess its needed to get the most of 64bit power .. or?.
If you do assemble something dont mind about the mouse and keyboard being included in the price and also dont mind going aboit over the top if its a significant performance increase.

Cheers.

I'd drop the 4GB of RAM down to 2GB, then bump the processor up to a E6600, and maybe the 320MB GTS up to a 640MB. What size screen is this connected to?

Edit: The spec below looks very good! I'd go with what he suggested. Better PSU etc for future needs.

WELCOME TO THE FORUMS. This is what i would recommend on your budget, 4gig of ram isn't really necessary.

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit Edition DVD - OEM - 1Pk

Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.13GHz (1066FSB) - Retail

Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3P (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-5300C3 667MHz Dual Channel Kit

BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC 320MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) -

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB ST3320620AS SATA-II 16MB Cache -

Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-520HXUK)

Lian-Li PC-7 PLUS Aluminium Midi-Tower Case - Black

Total : £764.77

You can easily clock that CPU to 3.0GHZ and above, and the memory will clock to 800MHZ 3-3-3-12, even 1000mhz at timings of 4-4-4-12.

As for VISTA, if your going to get it get the 64bit version, if you have any problems just put XP back on, you have nothing to loose.

Hi, first of all thanks for the fast replies.
supernova9:
For now im usinga 19" monitor and dont really need much bigger. plus i dont really care much about getting super high resolutions. (thats what the extra memory on the gfx is for im guessing)

stickroad:
Im fully confident that your setup is good, i just want to understand why its better.

For instance, Programs like Zbrush are (as far as i have been told) very memory dependant, so i just want to check if its wise going down 2gb, i dont know.. maybe 2 is more than enough.

And as for the Vista, i alredy have a Xp and i thought that you needed vista since theres a 64bit version and all, but ive just learned that you dont and vista is quite unstable at the moment. so ill drop that for now and buy it when/if needed.

So with vista taken out , can you maybe make some adjustments to get even better specs? thanks.

You can't have 4GB RAM with Windows XP, only Vista will register that much memory. So if you want Vista, get 4GB (because Vista is hungry) or if you want 4GB you'll need Vista.

Hey MrBen, i have just been looking at the requirements for both Zbrush and Mudbox. For Mudbox the recommended is 2GB but it also saids 64bit O/S is not recommended as of yet for both Zbrush and Mudbox. 2GB will be fine, 4GB would be ideal of course, but running them programs on 64bit Vista you might run into a few problems.

This is what i would recommend anyway:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.13GHz (1066FSB) - Retail

Noctua NH-U12F (Socket LGA775/754/939/940/AM2) Heatsink

Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3P (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-5300C3 667MHz Dual Channel Kit

BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC 320MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB ST3320620AS SATA-II 16MB Cache

Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-520HXUK)

Lian-Li PC-7 PLUS Aluminium Midi-Tower Case - Black

Total : £785.91

So you can clock the CPU to 3GHZ and above if you wanted to. Run the Memory at 800MHZ 3-3-3-12, even 1000mhz 4-4-4-12. Run the Hard drives in a RAID 1 setup for backup. A very nice system their.
