Hi all

Treating myself to a upgrade from a C2D E6550 (modest overclock) and I am a bit out of touch with current hardware. I am currently looking at the following. I have a single gtx460 (not planning on upgrading, only a very light gamer), couple of sata hard drives and a sata bd-rw already, my psu is a thermaltake 470W TR2-470W. Probably add an SSD soon.

  • G-Skill 8GB XL Ripjaws X for Intel Sandybridge Platforms DDR3
  • AsRock Z68 Pro3 Gen3 Motherboard (Socket 1155, DDR3, PCI Express 3.0, 7.1 HD Audio, ATX, ASRock On/Off Play Technology)
  • Intel Sandybridge i5-2500K Unlocked Core i5 Quad-Core Processor
How does this look any problems? Also I'm planning on over-clocking so I was wondering if you could recommend a reasonably priced cooler (say up to £35) that is easy to install and that would fit nicely on both the ASRock motherboard and also my case which is a fairly modest Asus TA-D31 Vento I had my eye on the Corsair CAFA50 but it looks huge and I am worried it wont fit or clear the ram.

Thanks a lot

no problems there, all will work fine together. but coolers will have problems fittin over the ram... would suggest either: as low profile

or

cooler wise this is a good one: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-001-GD&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=1395 will fit over ram above but not what u choose

+1 for the Gelid Tranquillo. Excellent cooler for the price. If you can spend more then there are of course better ones but in the £25 bracket I don't think you can do better

Thanks for that much appreciated.

I'll go with the lower profile crucial ram and the gelid. Ill measure up my case just to check it will clear everything OK.

Quite looking forward to getting this kit up and running hopefully it will be quite a big step up performance wise.

It will be a huge upgrade. I upgraded from an E8500 @ 4.0 ghz OC - i.e. a better chip than then one you currently have - to an i5 2500k @ 4.5ghz OC and the jump was huge.

1) 2 cores to 4 cores
2) upgraded architecture
3) overclocking ability (although my old E8500 was a great overclocker :p)

Enjoy!
