Hi

My current rig (see sig +4gb ram and 1gb 4780) is getting rather long in the tooth and it’s time to change.

The pc will mainly be used for gaming on a dual monitor (20”) setup running at 1600x900 (I like to play games in windowed mode and mess around/watch iplayer etc on the other monitor). The pc must be as quiet as possible as I am fed up watching movies etc and all I can hear is fans but at the same time I am looking to overclock to a moderate-high level.

Budget is the region of £1000 and here is my attempt minus a cpu cooler.

Advice in general appreciated, specifically the following items as my selection has been made on research from forums etc and I may have misinterpreted.

GFX card: I can’t make up my mind if I would be better getting, something like a 6850 or 6870 and upgrading when need as I don’t play at particularly high resolutions and save myself £50 - £80 for now

Motherboard: I know very little about motherboards. I have chosen the Asrock Extreme 4 because of its good reviews and it will accept Ivybridge when released should I wish to upgrade (I think i read this somewhere). However I am not sure if I need something so expensive. Also is the Z68 chipset works better with an SDD then a p67?

Power Supply: Only reason I chose this one is because it’s modular and has the word silent in the heading :P. Any better alternatives out there? Also do I need 700w. I can’t imagine I will xfire. By the time I think my system is struggling it is usually just as cheap to buy a single card of the next generation. So get the 600w version instead and save a tenner?

Case: I originally had my heart set on the Fractal R3 but it’s out of stock and the built quality issues. The Cooler Maser Silencio seems meet my needs and reviews seem to be generally good. The only thing which is putting me off is the lack of room to fit a cpu cooler. Max height it can take is 154mm and the Thermalright Silver Arrow which I did have in mind is 160mm :o. Can I have some suggestions on alternatives please which will fit, be as cool and quiet and no more expensive.

Note: The monitor is not for this rig but i would like its price included in the budget. OS is not needed and im getting a Samsung F3 1TB from somewhere else as its no longer stocked here

Looking forward to your advice and in anticipation thanks

No XFire, the Antec TruePower New 550W good for a 6950.

The Asrock Extreme 4 is good.

I would get a different case personally.

I think it's worth spending a little (£20?) for IvyBridge and support for the next generation GPUs. The GPUs at least will be worth on upgrade at some point.

SSDs take a big chunk out of the budget. Maybe consider a smaller one, or none at all :)

please tell me if ive missed something. im having internet problems which are making it hard to keep track of whats going in the basket, and what i thought i put in but didnt register)

GFX card: right now ATI is really the way to go for graphics cards because of their price. heres a comparison of the two cards you are deciding between:
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/293?vs=290
i chose the higher end one (but a different brand because its cheaper) because it fit in the budget and will mean the system doesn't need upgrading quite so quickly

motherboard: you might know very little about motherboards but youve chosen the one i'd recommend. your right that it works better with an SSD - it can use the SSD to help speed up the HDD. it does other stuff thats useful too. if i couldnt fit it in your £1000 budget i would have gone for the £99.98 gigabyte Z68 somethingorother, but the asrock offers plenty of upgrade options so it seems like a good choice

PSU: arguably the most important part of the PC. the one youve chosen isnt bad, but its not great either. ive put a much better one in that can cope with two of the 6950's in crossfire. if you really dont think you are going to use crossfire then go for the 550W version, but the price difference isnt too much and it gives you a massive upgrade option (crossfire gives ~95% FPS increase)

i cant tell you any more about the case than youve figured out yourself. the cooler ive recommended wont be as good as the silver arrow, but it will be super quiet. the cooler is exactly the same as a corsair H60, but it doesnt come with a fan. im not sure if it comes with thermal paste or not, i'll check and edit the post. the fan ive chosen is super quiet, but im not sure if its powerful enough for the job

Ok thanks for the suggestions guys, just a few things.

Is there any real difference between the Kingston and Corsair ram, or is the difference in your choices personal preference?

The OcUK H²Flo Liquid CPU Cooler seems to have jumped in price since you posted to £49.99. Also whats the expected longevity of these as i would want the system to last 4-5yrs.
