Hi,

Christmas present for someone that has all the peripheries....

I'm already at pretty much max budget. The recipent will not be gaming on they system. System will also not be overclocked, but otherwise want it to be as fast, reliable and have the most modern port and upgrade options as possible. Additional screens may be required but they can buy their own sodding graphics card if needed.

Can't trust the receipient to keep applications on one drive and media on another hence the 500gb ssd. Recipient does already have a 1tb hdd full of media which will be added to the system.

Really want to make sure there are no silly mistakes. Been a while since I have I have built a machine so it is a possibility.

Figured M.2 vs SATA sdd and RAM memory timings are unikely to have noticable impact on user experiencec.

[*] 1 x Intel Core i5-6600K 3.9GHz (Skylake) Socket LGA1151 Processor - Retail= £224.99

[*] 1 x Kingston Fury Black 8GB (1x8GB) DDR4 PC4-17000C14 2133MHz Single Channel Module - Black (HX421C14FB2= £55.99

[*] 1 x Seasonic S12II 520W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply= £58.99

[*] 1 x Crucial MX300 525GB SSD SATA 6Gbps 3D Nand 7mm Solid State Drive (CT525MX300SSD1)= £109.99

[*] 1 x Aerocool Aero 500 Midi-Tower Case - Black= £30.95

[*] 1 x Microsoft Windows 10 32/64-Bit - USB Pen Drive - Retail (KW9-00017)= £89.95

[*] 1 x Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 3 Intel Z170 (Socket 1151) DDR4 ATX Motherboard= £124.99

[/LIST]

Total: £707.55

Any thoughts?

The 6600 is slower and more expensive than the 6600k so that's a poor suggestion. I agree with the drop to a lower, cheaper motherboard though seeing as no overclocking will be done.

If no gpu is going to be used or a low power one then the Superflower Golden Green HX350 is a much better psu and more power than that pc will ever need.

Don't go for a single stick or memory and lose out on performance. This dual channel kit is faster and cheaper although it will default to 2133mhz on any board apart from a Z170.

If this is to be a internet browsing/Facebook/emailing pc then I can't help but feel that a 6600k is just a massive overkill and a waste of money. The i3 6100 would be more grunt than would ever be needed for those uses.

Thanks for all the replies!

Yes, I was planning on taking advantage on the current special offer on the 6600K (hence it beingg cheaper than the 6600). Even the 6400 (2.7mhz) to the 6600K (3.5mhz) seems like a significant enough difference to be worth the £35 extra?

My (admitedly) out of date preconception was i-7 = gaming top of the range or gaming CPU, i-5 = business and budget gaming and i3 was underpowered cheapo budget builds.

Requirements for the build have been hard to get pinned down from the user. It will be used for stock trading, and the user has talked about having multiple screens. It is more than possible however that the system will end up not being upgraded and will end up being used as is for the next 7 years!

I was prepared to spend a little extra on the motherboard to ensure it was upgradeable in terms of graphics card and RAM to allow flexibility, including adding extra screens or using a 4k screen in a year or so's time.

Also, as well as not having additional expandable memory slots, the H110 motherboard suggested has no UXB C connection which I was keen on for future proofing considering I suspect the system will end up being run into the ground. Happy to hear alternative thoughts on this though including the liklihood of being able to add a cheap pci board in future to add this capablity.

Good catch on the memory! I thought I had added a 2x4gb package so will definitely swap that out,

The Asus B150M-A-M2 has a single USB Type C port and also has a M2 socket so is a nice jump up in connectivity from a H110 board.

Even at the current "special offer" price the 6600k is massively overpriced. That price for a i5 is just disgraceful and is where the i7' should be priced at.
