Just want a check really before i go ahead and order will be my first attempt at building from scratch

Currently have machine as follows

Intel P4, 3.0GHz LGA775 Processor.
Corsair 1024MB DDR2 RAM
Seagate (ST3200822AS) 200 GB SATA x 2
NEC DVD_RW ND-3500AG

Will be keeping my case and using the above parts for a HTPC then the following parts below to be ordered to build a new PC

Intel Core 2 DUO E4300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.80GHz (800FSB) - Retail
OcUK GeForce 7600 GT 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
Samsung SpinPoint T HD501LJ 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM
Gigabyte GA_965P_S3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C5 800MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400DC)
Samsung SH-W183 18x18 DVD±RW Serial ATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM

Antec NSK2400 Desktop Case - 380W SmartPower PSU to house parts for HTPC

I dont use my PC for any gaming at all really just video editing and encoding, it will be connected to a LCD TV.

Couple of questions after reading lots of posts I feel the Intel E4300 should be fine for my needs am I correct ?
If I do decide to overclock will I need another cooler or will the stock one be ok as some posts seem to suggest it would be fine .?

Any thought or suggestions appreciated...thank you

As you're obviosuly on a budget, i'd say it all looks ok.

As for your two questions:

1. The CPU is OK, but video editng and encoding as you're probably aware is highly CPU dependant. So if you can i'd get the best possible CPU you can. An AMD AM2 5600+ based PC might even be better considering how cheap AMD chips are these days.

This link should provide some good comparisons ( http://tomshardware.co.uk/cpu/charts.html?modelx=33&model1=433&model2=696&chart=176 ), but your chosen chip isn't liosted so you'll have to guestimate where it would end up. Considering how much the E6600 beats the E6400 i suspect the E4300 is a fair bit slower than the E6400 and thus the E4300 is probably slower than the likes of an AM2 5600+ too.

edit: Benchmarks for photo and vid encoding: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2007/02/01/intel_core_2_duo_e4300/5.html The AMD Fx-62 is identical to an AMD 5600+ for reference purposes.

Having said all this, if you plan on overclocking and your chip/cooling cna handle it then it's all a moot point as you should fly once you push the closk up, although you should note that the E4300 is a tad stripped down compared to some other C2D chips in regeards to its virtualisation technology, cache etc.

2. Stock HSF should give you room to overclock but don't expect temps to be be great. Its certainly fine until you want to rag the CPU to find it's limit.
