Spec check before I buy

Lol, my missus doesnt quite know yet that our CC bill is gonna a 'little' bit larger than usual this month thanks to Conroe ;)

*cough yes dear, just playing around with some cheap parts i got*

You could probably save a little by going for a lower wattage PSU, the reason i specced that one is in case you decide to go crossfire in the future.

What one you reckon? 500W?

EDIT - If I got crossfire later.. I'd need to buy the 'master' card wouldn't I? Will this still be available in the future though... hmmm... decisions.

A 500w tagan or enermax would be fine i think. Sound card isnt essential but it will increase overall performance, not that you'd really need it on that beast, especially since you choose that board, seems a waste.

If you're not overclocking that cpu cooler is way way overkill. The arctic freezer is much cheaper, and nearly as good, still far better then the stock cooler, and if you gonna buy a custom cooler why have you got a retail cpu in the spec?..... more money wasted.

No idea tbh, i believe the x1900xt's have already been discontinued due to the upcoming x1950's release so it could be a good idea getting a mastercard now and adding a normal xt in the future even if second hand as prices are likely to stay the same if not rise. I do see people talking about using any 1900xt's for crossfire but again it's not something i know about in depth.

never noticed that, just assumed it was the same cpu i had specced.

Edit - my bad, i clicked the retail when trying to spec quickly. Original post amended ;)

Right.

Re: Retail version of CPU, there is no OEM version so can't I just chuck the retail cooler away? Rather than downgrade to the E6300 :s I'm confused!

So get OEM version of E6300 rather than retail E6600?

Have people really overclocked from 1.86Ghz to 3.2Ghz on an air set up like this one?

Silly question, also, do I *need* to bother with artic silver?

again it depends if you plan to overclock. With the P5W board you are likely to reach under 3 Ghz when coupled with a 6300 due to the multiplier being stuck at 7 and the board really not liking FSB above 420/430. Which would mean going for a different board with the 6300 to get the max out of it. Also would be cheaper.

Right well it now stands at:

I added AS 5 so I might as well use it... if I remember how! lol! (kidding - kinda).

Still not sure why I should get the E6300 over the 6600 but if it saves me money..!

I like the look of this board... so 3Ghz is the limit?

3Ghz is around the top mark for this board and the 6300. I get 2.94 and thats as far as i can go stable on that cpu. Atm i can get just over 3.4 on the 6600 but not finished with that yet.

Very few have had over 3 with the P5W+6300 and i still dont completely understand how they've managed it with the instability of this board with higher FSB's. The board is more suited to the 6600 due to that cpu having a higher multiplier letting you get higher Ghz through lower FSB.

Some of the cheaper boards such as the Gigabyte DS3, DS4 and the Asus P5B will let you acheive higher clocks with a 6300.

Bang per bucks the 6300 and a suitable board is the best choice if overclocking.

axe the floppy willy drive tbh

I find floppies handy and worth the few quid they cost.

Make that 3 more ;)

Edit - actually hadnt noticed till you pointed it out, been gettin carried away this after noon lol.
