Spec check, few concerns...

Would appreciate some advice on an initial build that was spec'd for me built around a E6300 and a X1950pro.

Firstly, I was recommended the Gigabyte GA_945PL_S3 (Socket 775) but now I'm concerned that the 800MHz FSB limitation is going to seriously handicap the system. Would I be better off going for a 965 based board? Recommendation?

Secondly, I ordered a Enermax Liberty 400W ELT400AWT PSU. At 400W is this going to be plenty to power the system (it is classed as SLI compliant so I would have thought it had enough juice)

800mhz RAM is plenty for the moment, and if it comes to it you can always buy a newer mobo in a year or so, and they should have come down in price a fair bit

p.s. dont know what your worrying about...800mhz is 4 times mine :p and i still play new games on max settings with zero problems (might have some trouble with crysis :p) :D

edit: i would have recommended 500w AT LEAST, but its worth a try. however if it's still possible to return the order and get a more powerful one then a corsair 520w, or 620w would be more than enough
 
I've read a couple of reviews that say that because it uses the 945 chipset then the C2D chips cannot run at their full speed (i.e. 1066MHz FSB) but are limited by the 800MHz FSB, i.e. clocking slower?
 
Also, if I upped the memory to 2GB of 5300 (rather than 6400) am I going to lose out on anything other than overclocking potential?

Maybe thinking of returning the mobo for a DS3 (might as well go the extra distance).

Would I be better also going for 2GB of 5300 or stick with the 1GB of 6400 (2GB 6400 is just a bit too much...)
 
2GB beats 1GB, just get a good make eg OCZ and it will still clock well
get DS3, disregard my previous post, i thought you were on about the DS3, and about it being handicapped, it wouldnt be that handicapped, it would still kick a p4 or AMD butt
 
The 945P-S3 would have been a better choice than the 945PL as it does support a 1066MHz FSB so will run a C2D at full speed. A 965-based board such as the 965P-S3 or -DS3 would be better long term as the 965 chipset is more suited to C2D.

The Liberty 400 should be okay if you don't run a monster graphics card.

Thanks for the replies. Will be a ATI X1950pro. Should the 400W Enermax be okay? As said, it is advertised as SLI capable so I would have thought it is capable but if anyone knows different, I'd appreciate the nod...

Yep, looking at returning the board and RAM getting a DS3 and 2GB 5300 instead.

i dont like running my x1900xt on a 450w psu, but for lack of money i would buy a new one, i'd advise 500w at least ;)

edit: seem to be a few issues with GeIL atm, i'd go for another brand, OCZ or corsair or somthing
 
Cheers. Well I went with a DS3 board afterwards, upped the PSU to the 520W Corsair and did get 2GB of Geil.

I saw the few posts on the Geil but am hoping it's just a few bad examples :eek: since it seems to been fully recommended in other posts and reviews.

well, GeIL was what i had in mind for my system in the new year, but i think i may end up with ocz or cellshock :D
