Howdy folks.

So I've been a bit out of the loop for the last 4-5 years after taking it easy with my MacBook and Xbox 360, so I haven't kept up with all the goings on, but I've tried my best :p

And I fancy getting back into PC gaming now, and having some extra grunt for other intensive tasks would be nice.

So I would just like to have my spec checked over in case I've missed anything obvious, this is what I've come up with for <£450

2 x OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz Obsidian Memory Kit 1.65V CL9(9-9-9-24)

Corsair 500W CX PSU

MSI HD R6850 Cyclone 1GB GDDR5 Power Edition

Gigabyte GA-H67M-UD2H-B3 H67 Socket 1155

Intel Core i3 2100 3.10GHz Socket 1155 3MB L3 Cache

Any input would be appreciated, thanks a lot :D

Well the memory is not the best. Also un sure if its ok for SB. memory is cheap so you could get a lot better for peanuts more. Want lower volts and timing.

Is that the card that can be unlocked to the 6870 sorry im on my phone so i can do a great deal to help.

If you go in the graphics card section its a sticky about the card

Is 450 your top budget? cos if you dropped the 2nd kit of RAM then for marginally more you could get an i5 2500K (extra £50) and a P67 mobo such as MSI's C45 - B3 rev (extra £20) and not sure if its just me but I cant see that memory listed (Im prob blind), imo an i5 plus 4 gig RAM is prob gonna be better than i3 plus 8 gig of RAM, plus the i5 would then be overclockable with it being K variant and P67 board

No thats the 6950 to 6970 youre thinking of, 6850 still not a bad card, though the 5850 is similar price actually and slightly better

I'm more interested in just getting the best future proofed system and then leaving it be, I fell out of touch with the overclocking and benchmarking lark after doing it for so long, so chasing numbers isn't really the main priority.

The priority is like I said, a good future proofed system that will be reasonably adequate in the coming years and that I'm not going to have to end up upgrading certain aspects of in the future, hence 1155 over 1556, 8GB of ram, etc.

This isn't going to be my main rig, it'll basically just be for casual gaming and to make life a bit easier when I need to encode stuff, etc, and so I have no interest in regular upgrades like I used to :p

All the input is appreciated though, as it'll give me some other avenues to consider.

Futureproofing is quite dead in the water nowadays. AMD are moving from AM3 to AM3+ and I bet Intel will release a new socket within the next 2 years that replaces both 1555 and 2011.

So I've been having a bit of a think since creating the thread, and thinking about the reasons and perks of building a new rig again, and have had a little bit of a change of heart.

I suppose I've been approaching it from with the attitude of the scene I was active in, and the industry seems to operate a bit differently now.

So I suppose just gunning for the biggest bang for buck on the day would be the best approach, so this is what I've come up with now.

Intel i3 540

Gigabyte GAA-H55M-UD2H

4GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600Mhz 9-9-9-24 1.50v

1GB MSI HD6850 Cyclone Power Edition

600W Corsair 600CX

Coolermaster V6GT Cooler

I don't really want to stretch to a 2500K since it'll either put me over budget or I'll have to cut corners and detract from an overall rounded setup.

And since the 2500K is off the cards, I guess an i3 540 does make more sense than a 2100, as I should be able to get 4ghz easily from the 540, I guess I'll be an overclocker once more :p
