Spec Check - For Local LAN Centre

I've been given the task of spec'ing-up some new PC's for the local LAN center in Newcastle.

We'll essentially be selling off some of the old stock (17" CRT's, AMD 3200+, 1GB RAM, 6600GT) which is looking and performing in a rather dated manner. We're thinking about initially buying 10 of these new setups including, the box, new monitors, keyboards and mice.

I've unfortunately lost touch a bit with the hardware industry since my last upgrade for my PC at home back in late 2007, so I'm sure the wise OCUK forums can direct me where I've gone wrong.

With us buying them in a relatively large bulk, we're obviously trying to keep the costs down as much as possible, whilst still getting some near top-end stuff. Bearing in mind, these PC's we currently run have been going for the thick end of 2-3 years now, and weren't the best money could buy back then. Most of our clientel play the likes of DOTA, CSS, Battlefield, TF2, DODS and so forth, but we would like to be able to provide these with a high, stable FPS on some nice new monitors to provide an all-round much improved gaming experience.

We will be holding back some of the older hardware to provide some ideal Internet browsing setups whilst others can still game and not hog the higher-end hardware.

Here's what I've come up with.

Budget of around £700 per unit including VAT, with adequate scope for future-proofing and upgradability if possible. But if it comes to sacrificing that or performance, performance would take the priority.

I base a lot of what I've put up with personal experience with it. I've got the same monitor and processor in my PC at home, and currently have two servers running the processor, motherboard and RAM.

Would go duel core like an E8500, Go P45 Motherboard something like an Asus P5Q-E, stick with one type of RAM either of those to are good.. if you using XP 2gig is fine vista you will need 4gig.. cant see you have a graphics card either... 4850 would be fine

Do you need quad core? If not then as suggested a quick dual core would probably be better - E8400, E8500.

Onboard sound is probably find unless you are talking really high quality audio output - either great headphones or decent speakers/hifi kit to play the audio.

The PSU might be slightly overspecified for the needs unless you end up getting a particularly high end graphics card or overclock significantly. Incidentally a 4850 would be a good choice as Pneumonic suggests or failing that a 512mb 8800GTS.

Finally I'd see about negotiating a discount for buying in bulk if you can, 10 units might still be on the low side but it is worth asking at least. Remember and link your forum account with the OcUK store account for free delivery.

Probably not, only that I've been more than happy with my QC at home, I would imagine it's more future-proof as well, I could be wrong though.

Yes you're probably right, I was just discussing this with my colleague across the table and decided a soundcard probably isn't that necessary.

Regarding the PSU, no we wouldn't be thinking about overclocking just yet, but maybe a bit further down the line to get a little more power out of the PC's once they become a bit more dated.

Thanks for the advice, here's what I'm left with now:

could keep the old keyboards and mice, the specc'd stuff is too nice for angry gamers to bash around?

other than that a tasty spec for the money!

We've actually found it's the headphones that have the hardest life. :p

The mice and keyboards don't really have much of a problem. We've been using the same ones for 2 years now and they're starting to look a little dated.

I would maybe wait until the e7200 are instock because there great budget chips.
A modular PSU like the corsair is good but costs a fair bit more.
And personally 4GB of RAM is first thing that goes into my basket as the difference between 2GB and 4GB to me feels massive and i dont think a 32bit operating system is going to cripple it to much.

The specification looks pretty good now, if the budget matters and to get it nearer to £700 then I'd go with an E8400 as the .16ghz bump will be barely negligible in real performance terms, that saves £15.

The Antec Earthwatts 500w would do for the PSU and allow for upgrades at about £10 less.

You could also consider going for a P43 or even a P35 based motherboard to save another £10-20, the difference in performance terms won't be much, if any, and since you don't tend to upgrade these sort of machines regularly it won't matter if you go for a slightly older chipset like the P35.

The P35's don't appear too much of a difference in price, literally £5 less. I do have an IP35-Pro in my home PC and that's actually more expensive than the one I had in my basket. When it comes to motherboards, I'm more interested about the reliability rather than the overclocking performance, athough I assume both the one listed and the one I have at home are going to fall under both categories?

Both should work reliably and work well for overclocking. The P43s are cut down versions so check first that they have all the features you require before considering them too much but if you can live with them they are a decent way to save a bit of cash.

I'd imagine one of those Gigabyte ones would do? Nothing too flashy but would hopefully get the job done?

This is the spec I'm sitting on at the moment

Of course, if you are buying 10 of these, I would ring OcUK and see if they can work out some sort of deal ;).
That final spec looks good to me. Those Earthwatts PSU's are good little units.
