I would get a faster CPU, if you're going to scale to that panel rez.
Use a mobo that's passive IMO for a HTPC. The built in scaler on that panel isn't very good apparently.

i'm ordering the following tomorrow:

MSI K8NGM2-FID
athlon 64 3000
seagate 7200.10 320gb hdd

but already have:

2 * 512 twinmos pc3200 ram
dvd rom
enermax 431watt psu

motherboard is microatx but has onboard gfx/sound/gb lan

nice spec snow-munki

run your ram as fast as possible on that board. I had some stutter problems when watching one channel and recording on a second tuner, which i finally traced to my ram. I was running 4 x 256mb @ 333mhz dual channel. Going to 2 x 512mb @ 400mhz dual channel solved the problem. I can only assume it was down to memory bandwidth so i now run the htt 225mhz and therefore the ram @ 450mhz to give it extra headroom

Incidentally - in response to the OP i reckon a 3100+ sempron is plenty for a media center

whats the default clock speed of the 64 3000?
Is it faster that the Sempron..?

I'm also toying with the idea of getting a P4 D 805, would that be better ..?

Help !!

Would this be a better cpu than the Sempron..?

AMD Athlon 64 3400+ 2.2ghz Socket 939 ADA3400DAA4BY

I think the CPU is fine, although maybe you should change the graphics card to something like a 9800xt or 9800pro.
