Here's my planned spec, kinda changed recently but due to college starting soon I don't have as much money as I originally thought.

If you'd kindly look over the spec and express your opinions I'd be grateful.

Chosen Quadcore to future-proof somewhat with main intention being gaming.
I've gone for 1066Mhz Ram as hoping to get a 3.7Ghz clock on the CPU.

Will be holding out till the release of the 4870x2 boards to see if there are any price cuts before ordering.

Cheers

if you're holding on for the 4870X2s then you may as well wait for the quadcore shakeup as well

that psu is overkill tbh, I'd go for a corsair 620W modular and save some pennies.

pc8500 is overkill tbh (3.6 can be reached with that chip and 1:1 ratio with pc6400 RAM)
although the ocz platinum RAM at the top of the page is a fantastic price, so i'd change to that myself.

mx-2 is great paste, but ocz freeze is meant to be better:

there is little difference, as you can see if you read that thread ;)

Looks good bud. A corsair HX 620 would save you a few quid on the PSU tho. 3.7Ghz may be a tough oc but you can't argue with the price of the 1066 RAM these days. Also for the price of the mobo you could get a X38/48 for more future proofing.

Edit: A bit slow

Cheers guys.

Didn't think of waiting for the new Quadcores as the Q6600 is a pretty damn good price already and I never tend to go for brand-new tech due to the premium price tag. I may hang on till the 10th though to see if the Intel price-cuts make any effect.

I considered pc6400 originally but there didn't seem to be much difference in the price to that of the pc8500 hence my decision to test my luck with a 3.7 clock.

Hadn't heard of that paste so will certainly look into that.

Can't see myself ever going crossfirex so will probably just stick to the p45 board, however thanks for the suggestion.

Unless there's anything else I'm pretty much set? :)

I think I'm right in thinking that the Q6600 is going to come down in price. also this range isn't going to have a premium price, existing 45nm chips are coming down and a Q9400 is coming in.

it's worth reading up on before you buy, at the very least.

Not really much to change there. The only thing that I would do is change the Seasonic for an HX620 (it is actually the same power supply), get an Xigmatek HDT-S1283 (not available here unfortunately, get some OcUK!) and change the motherboard to a P5Q Pro (I don't really think that the extra £40 or so for the Deluxe model is worth it, that is very near X48 territory). That will save a nice bit, and give you a bit more chance to get near that 3.7GHz (high aim, but you might be able to get it).

The 'brand-new' reference was to nehalem, as I wasn't sure if you were referring to that or the price cuts on the 10th. :)
That will probs push the Q9550 to the £200 bracket? which I think may just be out my range. :/

I've changed to the PSU to the HX620 as advised however gonna stick with Deluxe mobo.

Regarding the ram though, what ram would be best for a 3.6 clock?
I imagine I'd be going 450*8, however I won't know till I have the hardware.
I was initially aiming high but have read a bit more and it seems 3.6 is more realistic on air :p

Thanks guys :)

I'd get the 8500 over the Q6600

3.6 on Q6600 is really all about your luck, even with tuniq tower ;-).
You will need to get good chip to get this much, unless you have some EXTREME cooling and can afford high volts ;-).

I would say 3.4 is more realistic if you want to keep the temps on good level for 24/7 OC use. But as I said, all depends on how good chip you get, you might get 3.8, you might get 3.0 max ;), its a gamble . Still I would grab a wolfdale over it for gaming anytime.

The motherboards will all overclock pretty similarly. They are all based off the same chipset, of course. Cooling will only play a part once the clock starts to reach 500MHz or so. Sticking with the Deluxe is alright of course.

I would be surprised if you couldn't get 3.6GHz, TBH. It is a very common clock, and many people get it on air.

Why not swap the antec 1200 to a Nzxt tempest case, very similar to the Antec but far superior in quality, cooling and it only costs 60 quid inc.

cases are a very subjective product, please always let someone, if they have chosen a particular case, stay with it. they are the ones who have to look and use it everyday, so w.e they are comfortable with IMO let them have it.

unless ofcourse they didnt spec one, and want one specced :)

There's nothing wrong with suggesting another one lol... He may not have even considered the one mentioned.

Cheers however I'll probably stick with the Antec 1200 as I prefer the look.
That Nzxt is a very nice case though, as is the HAF-932 by CM.

Any views regarding the ram? Ben's pointed out the OCZ Platinum @ £54.99 over the OCZ HPCE, get that or something else for the 3.6 clock?

Thanks :)

I only suggested the other case because sometimes you dont always know whats avaliable and there is nothing worse than building your rig and someone showing you a case you like a week later. Must say Chadd i also like the HAF-932 by CM just hope Ocuk get it in stock soon.
