Hi all,

My first post on the OC Forums :D

Next week, I intend to order a new processor, motherboard, memory and gpu. I'm upgrading from:

Asus A8N Delux
Athlon 64 X2 4800+
NVidia 7900 GT
2GB (2x1) DDR Ram

This is my main machine. I use it mainly for games (the occasional FPS, some MMO's but mostly flight sims like EECH, LOMAC, FS X - hence quad core) but also for some development/office work.

I'm pretty much settled on going for a Core2 Quad Q9450 as this fits my budget pretty well. On the GPU front, I'll definitely be getting the ATI 4870.

As for memory and motherboard, that's where I'm struggling. All I know for sure is that I want 4GB (2x2GB) of the fastest possible RAM for my money and a motherboard that will do the rest of the setup some justice. I think I want a mobo that supports 16/16 CrossfireX (on the off chance that dual 4780's become a sensible option in the near future) and I do want something that will allow me to achieve decent overclocking results with my memory / cpu choice.

My budget is around £650. If I assume £206.79 for the CPU and £176.22 for the GPU, that leaves around £270 to spend on the mobo and RAM

Apologies for the wall of text but I wanted to make sure I answered the questions which may otherwise have been asked. Thanks in advance :)

P.S. Any recommendations a suitable cooler for the CPU?

Welcome to the forums. Based on what you've said you require this might do, you may wish to wait until the forthcoming price drops from Intel (around the middle of this month I believe) and depending on what your current PSU is you may need a new one.

My advice is... don't bother. You aren't going to get a performance boost that is worth the money. Stick with your current setup, maybe upgrade the graphics card to a 4850, and you will be fine.

Hey,

Thanks for putting this together. I have a couple of questions though. Is there any reason why I should opt for the 800MHz memory instead of going for something like the "GeIL PC2-8500C5 1066MHz EVO ONE"?

I've also read a lot of very positive comments on the Asus P5E X38 board. How does this stack up against the Abit IX38 you mention?

Thanks again for taking the time to reply :)

I wouldn't buy the Evo One memory because the heatsinks look stupid but that isn't a good enough reason to advise against it really. However something like the Geil Black Dragon PC8500 is cheaper and should perform as well. If you've got the cash to spare and you want to overclock then PC8500 begins to make more sense as it should allow you to go further than PC6400. Check however that the motherboard supports booting at a minimum of 2.2v.

I picked the Abit mainly because it was the first X38 motherboard in the list and a bit cheaper than all bar the DFI, Asus tend to make good motherboards so there is no harm in going for it instead.

Lol! Honest and helpful :)

Not sure how/where to check this but I'll go take a closer look at the specs for the Asus P5E X38.

Cheers

I wouldnt buy Q9450 just because you want to spend 200quid on CPU and that fits your budget. It's not really a gaming CPU.

I would go with either Q6600, E8400 or E8600 ( should be out in a matter of week - two ).
Also there will be E8400 and E8500 with the new improved steppings which look sweet.

I would also grab PC8500 for this if you get good cooling like Tuniq or TRUE.
