New to this, so please be kind :D I am looking to build my own PC. Not really needed for gaming or overclocking, just a good quality PC for the home.

Will be used to stream video / pics to my Xbox 360 and take video from my Video Camera. Runs Office and Sage etc.

Here goes:

LG GSA-H66NBAL 18x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM £18.99

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.66GHz 12MB-cache (1333FSB) Processor - Retail £219.99

Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-5400C4 TwinX (2x1GB) £27.99

BFG GeForce 8400 GS 512MB DDR2 HDTV/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £35.99

MSI P7N Diamond nForce 780i SLi (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard with Free Creative X-FI Card £159.99

Antec Sonata Plus 550 Quiet Midi-Tower Case - NeoPower 550W Modular PSU (Black/Silver) £84.99

Hitachi Deskstar T7K500 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (0A33437) £58.99

Total: £625.92

Any glaring mistakes?

thanks for any help

I'd say that's massive overkill on the CPU there. If you aren't planning on gaming/video editing then you wouldn't need more than an E8400 if you wanted to spend money or something like an E2200 if you wanted to do a bit of overclocking.

Yer it does seem very overkill if thats all youre doing. if you wanted to go quad Q6600 is the best bet but even then it seems a lot for what you need. You could put 6400C4 memory in there too for a very little price increase

Fair point, and the OCZ PC2-6400 is in fact cheaper than the Corsair Ram selected there plus would open up the possibility of overclocking if required.

The motherboard is massive overkill for the suggested uses, any decent P35 or even P31 based motherboard would be more than sufficient and saves getting on for £100.

Id go for a Intel E8200 Wolfdale 2.66GHz and a MSI P31 Neo2-FR Intel P31 motherboard with some CL4 PC2-6400 ram, that setup will save you £250!! and for your needs run everything you need identically or at least just as fast as that 780i/quad setup.

If you do fancy overclocking those little e8200 fly on the cheap G33 and P31 Chipset :)

Thanks for your help everyone, I have a few more questions and a revised spec.

I have chosen 32bit Vista, can anyone convince me that I should be using 64bit? There seems to be backwards compatability issues that I do not need the hastle of.

If I did decide to do some homce video editing, will this setup be ok? Any video editing would be the rare family video editing, not anything more than that.

Revised Spec:
BFG GeForce 8400 GS 512MB DDR2 HDTV/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £35.99

LG GSA-H66NBAL 18x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.00GHz (1333FSB) - Retail £174.99

MSI P31 Neo2-FR Intel P31 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £44.99

G.Skill 2GB DDR2 HK PC2-6400C4 (2x1GB) CAS4 Dual Channel Kit (F2-6400CL4D-2GBHK) £36.99

Antec Sonata Plus 550 Quiet Midi-Tower Case - NeoPower 550W Modular PSU (Black/Silver) £84.99

Hitachi Deskstar T7K500 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (0A33437) £58.99

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit Edition DVD - OEM - 1Pk (66I-00715) £59.99

Total £617.90

thanks

If it were me i wouldnt pay that much for the E8400, prices are really high at the moment because theyre out of stock, i got mine for £123 about 2 weeks ago.

agree

On the whole you will see no real advantages running 64 vista.

hail-hail that second spec looks much better. Agreed that you are currently paying through the nose for the processor.

Only reason to use Vista 64 is if you intended to use 4 Gigs of Ram any time soon.

Thanks everyone for all the help, I have ordered the spec as described and will be getting it today :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I have ordered the processor elsewhere and got it for £140, so happy with theat. The rest ordered from here.

Can't wait now :D
