Spec check please - £1700 general all rounder!

how on earth can you compare an SSD to an HDD, awful recomendation!!!!!!

I assumed he meant a slower drive for storage as an SSD for OS/Common programmes means you don't need the maximum speed for storage. Playing an MP3 file or watching a move is no faster from an SSD that it is from a 5400rpm drive.

I'll probably stick with the Caviar as one of the things I want to do is play with VMs so the speed will be a benefit to me but if it was just storage it would make sense to go slower/bigger for less money

Kept some of what you spec'd as you obviously like it (i.e the monitor, SSD, cooler etc).

The GPU has LOADS of VRAM, the card should be 9.5inches so should fit in the case no problems.

I realise the case is a budget option however it does have 4 120mm fans, temp display and fan controller with cable management. No USB3 ports but the "break out" box that comes with the mobo covers this short fall. Is windowed so to speak to help show off what you have inside. It includes a power extension lead too to help with tidying the cables behind the mobo.

I wouldn't blame you for going with a gigabyte mobo, I went with this Asrock mobo to be different and have fun with the colour co-ordination. The RAM is gold, yes it has aggressive heatspreaders but this isn't an issue when you are using a waterblock on the CPU.

Added a bigger storage drive that is still 7200rpm, there is a cheaper 2TB eco option. PSU is modular and has the same power output as your choice but is slightly cheaper. Has the same 5 year warranty as your corsair choice as well :)

Hope this helps, any questions or problems come build day feel free to post back

Thanks for the suggestions Honosuseri, I'll certainly look at a 4gb version of the 670 if it's in stock when I'm actually ordering! Not so sure about the case, shouldn't really matter as it's under my desk & out of sight but I've never liked windowed cases and these days that is a little limiting! I really like the Silverstone FT-02B but it's a little big and about £80 more than the P280!

I notice the WD drive has come down in price - when I posted this a couple of days back it was £119 so that's another £20 saved :D With both at the same price I'll probably stick with the WD, I've used them for years without problem and patently don't need the extra space!

There are so many choices when it comes to memory - at the end of the day that might be what's in stock on the day, I'm not mad about overclocking memory so if I can, great but if not it's not a worry.

All fair comments bud, it's your build after all.

The GPU is on pre-order, they usually up the price once it's in stock. I use the Z9 a lot as you get a lot for the money (i have one myself), by being cheaper it helped average out the cost of the more expensive GPU with more VRAM than your choice.

Good luck with the build, I look forward to see what you settle on. Remember as you aren't ordering now, prices will change as there are weekly as well as daily offers. So it might be best to spec nearer the time you intend to buy, so we can point out the best kit for the price at the time :)

Would you have enough space in the Z9 for a long 670?

I would keep the P280, or a Corsair Obsidian 550D (kinda the same deal). Antec might have better internal temps.

Best airflow case in the range is the Silverstone RV03, but it's not a looker.

I do think these things through brother ;)

Card is 241mm the case takes upto 280mm. Mute point really as our mutual friend doesn't seem sold on the Z9 case anyway. Was nice of you to ask and check it would fit though :)

Not sure if above posters have suggested already (too innebriated to read) but I still regret not getting a full tower case for my PC and I really think for £1700 full tower should be done unless space is a real issue.

I would also go for a top air CPU cooler myself (as above), dunno why- just don't like water and components probably never will - scary :)

It's a phobia of mine :) Getting the components, installing everything, putting the video card in and... it doesn't fit!

Why can't AMD keep their cards small? Size complex maybe.

If it's bigger then it must be better, right? My phobia is buying it all, installing all the bits and finding one of the PSU leads isn't long enough. My last build I ended up running the 24pin across the MB rather than behind it as it wouldn't otherwise reach - and that was (Still is) a Thermaltake 1200w PSU so they would surely expect it to be used in big towers -this was in an Antec P192. My other phobia is air coolers...the most stressful part of my last build was having to use a flat bladed screwdriver to hook the retainers under the clips for a big old Zalman fan. It was the last thing I did, it was late, I was tired and already stressed...and one slip could have gouged a chunk out of the MB. I'm told they are easier now but still like the idea of a self-contained water block to keep things cool. I've had full-towers in the long distant past but never put enough into them to justify one. The top of my current Antec is just the right height for a USB hub, small CD cakebox and so on, a full tower wouldn't give me that much space - instead it would be empty on the inside!

I'm pretty settled on the specific CPU/SSD/HDD/CPU Cooler/Case/PSU but still undecided on the specific GPU (90% certain it will be a 670, 10% 680 but 0% on brand), MB (Definately Z77 but Asrock, Gigabyte or Asus) and RAM - So many options!

roll a dice :)

I would go with the UD5. Looks like a solid board in every sense.

If you like big PSUs, I would take a serious look at the Silverstone Strider 1200. Completely overkill of course.

And the 670 KFA2 EX OC. It's like a 670 with a supercharger (but quiet!).

RAM, Vengeance Low Profile 8GB, but I like to play it safe.
