I am thinking of upgrading my old X64 Socket 939 AMD System;
I already have a OCZ 800GTX graphics card.
I already have Sata DVD Writer drive
I already have a couple of WD 500GB sataII drives.

Your expert advise is really welcomed.

Motherboard
Abit IP-35 Pro, iP35 Express

CPU
Intel Core 2 Quad-Core Q6600 G0 SLACR, 95W

Memory
4GB (2x2GB) CorsairXMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800MHz

Case
Antec P182

CPU Cooler
Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme 120mm heat sink

PSU
750W TX Corsair PSU, single 12V rail, energy efficient, quiet & cool

I will overclock the system to get 3Ghz or so out of the CPU etc...
Is the memory I have chosen ok?

My questions are
will it all fit in the case ok; will I need any extension leads of any kind etc...

What is the best CPU Fan to attach the Ultra-120 Extreme ?

What is the best fan controller to go for?

Is it best to go with 4GB or should I stick to 2GB; I will use my PC for a lot of gaming under XP (32bit) and vista;

many many thanks

Stu

Spec looks fine to me, although the choice of case is a personal matter I can't fault it.

As for the 4GB, realistically you need a 64 bit operating system to make full use of it, as under XP and Vista 32bit you will only get 3.25Gb max.

If DirectX10 compatibility is not high on your agenda list, then I would suggest sticking with XP and going with 2GB for now.

Many thanks for your comments and replying so quickly.

what other cases could I go for ? - bearing in mind I need to get a 8800GTX Card in it - and this is 275mm long and also it needs to fit the CPU Cooler.

What is a good Fan to go on the CPU Cooler ?

Thanks

Stu

other cases you can have are antec 900 if you like it Very good cooling.

cpu cooler i would go for either:
arctic cooling freezer 7 pro (good enough to get to 3ghz)
tuniq tower 120 (i think its the best air cooling but its massive and not sure will it fit in a p182)

also since you spending 100 on the motherboard i would have gotten a ASUS p5k-e wifi ap, or if you can a ASUS p5k premium wifi ap. the asus and the abit ip35 pro was reviewed in a issue of custom pc and it seems the abit ip35-e which is half the pro price can generate a higher stable FSB. yet the asus had amazing amount of overclocking bios features.

here link to ip35 pro review(read conclusion for short):

http://www.custompc.co.uk/labs/137970/abit-ip35-pro.html

here link to asus p5k premium wifi
http://www.custompc.co.uk/labs/137997/asus-p5k-premium-wifi-ap.html

also if you only going for 3ghz and q6600 has multiplyier of 9

3000/9 = 333.333333

so as long as you get a mobo with 334mhz+ stable fsb i dont think its a problem but i still go with asus as it looks nicer and it HAS NO VDROOP!!!

excellent

I have now changed my Motherboard to Asus P5K Premium/WiFi-AP, iP35

Is there more room in a Antec 900 for the CPU Cooler and VGA card then a P182 ???

I want a case that has plenty of room basically for these large items.

Revised Spec

Motherboard
Asus P5K Premium/WiFi-AP Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

CPU
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.00GHz (1333FSB) - Retail

CPU Cooler
Tuniq Tower 120 CPU Cooler (Socket 478/754/939/940/AM2/LGA775)

Memory
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC)

2 Lots of the above memory to give me 4GB....

Still unsure on case; I am hoping the Antec 900 has enough room for the Tuniq Tower 120 Cooler + the OCZ 8800GTX Graphics cards

is the PSU I have chosen ok; does it have long enough cables for this case or the P182?

Tuniq Tower 120 CPU Cooler (Socket 478/754/939/940/AM2/LGA775)
fits in the antec 900 no problem also IT CAN FIT AN 8800GTX!! but really if you gona spend £250 i recommend getting ATI HD3870 x2 which is even faster than 8800ULTRA which is faster than the GTX.

btw i cant find a OCZ 8800gtx but i did find a
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-051-OK&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=877

and for only:

oops i foght i saw the HD 3870x2 was 250 but i guess not, but if you can stretch to that get it :D

o just noticed you changed you cpu, i would recommend sticking with the Q6600 GO. i'm pretty sure that 4 cores running 3GHZ will be faster than 2 cores running 4GHZ. also if you must get a cpu for 200 try something like this:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-201-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=793

its same arcitecture as the one you picked so it used 45nm transistors, therefore lower power lower heat, so i guess this can be potentially as overclockerble as the one you picked.

wonderful advice chaps;
here is my shopping basket now
I already have a 8800gtx to use from my current computer system.

I live in stoke-on-trent; is it worthwhile going to pick the items up... or should I just order them for delivery tomorrow ?

Is it worth going for Vista 64-bit Home Premium or should I stick with Vista 32-bit premium ?

many thanks chaps

the reason I liked the 900 case was the top usb items as the system will sit under my desk... also I am not sure the corsair PSU cables will fit the length of the P182 case. Suppose I might go with the P182 as I am happy with the P180 i have... also it gives it that bit more room for my 8800GTX Card..

I have also removed the extra Sata cables.

I will probably go and pick up.. like you said - no need to pay for postage then :) and I get it quicker...

Hi,

I have gone for 4 x 1GB sticks; is it better to go for 2x2GB sticks? - if so what memory should I choose from overclockers; there is so much choice it baffles me.. ?

Cheers

That is such a load of complete crap (the review)!!

Got my Abit Ip35 Pro overclocking a Q6600 @3.4 Ghz 24/7 for more than 7 months. I have also tried 3.6Ghz with no issues.

I have the same Case (its great, i love it but as mentioned its a dust magnet). Same Mobo (cant fault it, had to update BIOS when i got it for the E8400 but using EZflash did that in the first 10 mins). I have an 8800 GT which is HUGE and covers most of the SATA ports leaving me 2... which is more than i need luckily but it's something to bear in mind.

Also using the same PSU, with the cables organised and cable tied i can keep the entire area over the MOBO clear which is not only great for the side viewing window but should leave you plenty of room for the cooler.

Hope that helps.
