I’m trying to decide on what to upgrade to but this is what I’ve come up with so far. I don’t want to go any higher in budget than what is below but here goes…

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) - £32.89

PowerColor ATI Radeon HD 3850 Pro 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) – Retail - £103.39

Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-520HXUK) - £68.14

And then I don’t know whether the AMD or Intel route is the best option.

Asus M2N-SLi Deluxe (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard - £68.14

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4400+ 2.30GHz (Socket AM2) – Retail - £52.86

Total Price - £325.42

Or

Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L Intel P31 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard - £50.51

Intel Core 2 Duo E2180 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.00GHz (800FSB) – Retail - £58.74

Total Price - £313.67

Thanks in advance.

Looking good but please go with the Intel setup. I've just moved from a 2.8Ghz X2 3800 to the system in my sig and it whoops it. I just got it and built it on Friday. Booted at 3.2Ghz first time and ran like that since. Much faster than my old AMD. I just can't believe it took me so long to move over.

Intel of the two options there, you will need to overclock a bit to get the best out of it but it is very easy to do and there are plenty of guides available.

//edit I might also suggest getting a 512mb version of the graphics card if you can as it will help with games, particularly if you up the resolution.

agreed.
get an aftermarket cooler for the CPU though, an arctic freezer 7 pro is nice and cheap ;)

I'll get a third on Pro wasters 512mb choice of the 3850 graphics card. Missed that in first post.
