Hi all - How does this spec stack up? Any ideas what is the best quiet cooler for this?

I might do a little clocking if I can but nothing extreme. Sourcing quieter parts is probably more important.

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - OEM + Colin McRae Dirt 2 Full Game - £177.38

Asus P6T SE Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard - £124.34

Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel (TR3X6G1600C9) - £113.03

Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card + Colin McRae Dirt 2 + Ruby Doll - £104.33

Corsair TX 650W ATX SLi Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-650TXUK) - £66.95

Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB SATA-II 64MB Cache - OEM (WD10EARS) - £63.47

Ditch that mobo, the SE stands for **** edition! Go for the p6t I know it's more expensive but you get what you pay for. As for coolers it depends how much you are willing to spend. If your budget is tight I'd go for the arctic cooling freezer 7 pro rev 2. If you want to spend a little more have a look at the prolimatech megahalem or the corsair h50-1.

I would suggest buying a full retail chip instead of an OEM one.

3 years warranty with the manufacturer with retail, and only 1 year warranty with the retailer on OEM products.

Like David said, if your budget is tight go for something like the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, or the Cogage True Spirit (it's basically a cheaper version of the TRUE), but if you don't mind shelling out a bit more, then the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme, Prolimatech Megahalems, or the Corsair H50 would be good choices.

Thanks - 3yrs on the retail sounds very good considering I want this system to last about that long.

Probably going to go for the Megahalems with a Akasa AK-FN057.

Is everything else ok? Are there gfx / ram / psu for the money?

Bare in mind that the 3 yr warranty provided with the retail is only value when it is used solely with the stock heatsink.

Not suggesting you just keep hold of the stock heatsink & box or anything ;)

BTW the HD4890 is a faster card than the HD5770 so unless you need the DX11, I'd go with the HD4890... I'm probably going to get shouted at for that.

Also the Corsair PSU you've listed isn't modular. If you want modular you might like to spend £3-4 more and get either the BeQuiet, Lian li or Antec sig.

I weighed up about the 4890 and thought the 5770 edged it because it is quieter (from what I could gather) and a tad cheaper.

How so? The P6T SE may be the cheapest ASUS X58 board, but it certainly isn't a bad board. It doesn't have the super-robust power system of the Rampage II or P6TD or SLI support, but for a reasonable price that gives you a nice board which will clock reasonably well, support crossfire and allow for future expansion -just what the OP is asking for.

To the OP, I can strongly recommend both the H50 and Megahalems as I have used both. At a push I would say go with the Megahalems as it will likely last forever and with a single noctua fan it will be quieter than the H50.

Also, is the WD Green 1TB going to be your primary disk? If so, I would suggest looking for a faster drive like the Samsung F3 or WD Black. The green is cool and quiet - perfect for storage, but not ideal use as a primary hard disk.
