Hi All

I'm pricing up a new PC for a friend. I asked on here about 6 months ago, so ive used the basis of the responses in there, to come up with the below spec. Is the Ryzen 5 2600 still the way to go?

I'm not sure about the motherboard, i saw the bundle, which seemed like a good deal, but i havent managed to find a review of it.

He needs wifi, would i be better off finding a board with wifi built in?

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,100.61 (includes shipping: £20.82)

Maybe this spec? (different board with wifi).

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,145.66 (includes shipping: £20.82)

Thanks guys

Zen2 Ryzens are coming available in 7th day.
Those will improve single core/thread performance.

Anyway 2400MHz memory is garbage and no doubt will cripple also Zen2s.
3000MHz should be minimum for Ryzen.

Also Samsung (over)prices their SSDs expensively. WD Blue 3D is £57

Even NVMe would be cheaper

Power supply could be dropped to 650W saving £10 for better uses.

That MSI B450 Carbon is very good board for its price.
Unlike most cheaper AM4 boards it has quite decent CPU VRM.
That Gigabyte has basically cheaped out to absolute minimum garbage VRM...
Whose cooling is also sabotaged by that IO-cover marketing excrement to make sure it runs hot.
MSI also has feature to flash BIOs without CPU, so getting Zen2 Ryzen to work with would be easy.

Thanks EsaT

It does seem that waiting for Zen2 is worthwhile, i hadnt realised it was that imminent.

Thanks for the heads up on the ram, i'll switch that out.

Samsung SSDs are well proven to be reliable. its worth spending the small amount extra in my opinion. NVMe, pcie is faster, granted, but in the real world, the difference isnt that huge.

I see your point about the PSU, If we get to the point where we need to save £10, then maybe i'll lower it.

Thanks for the mobo info, being able to flash the bios without a CPU is useful with the new ryzen chips coming.

Cheers

wait for Zen 2 , wait for Nvidia to launch their Super RTX cards on the 2nd and then AMD with their navi cards on the 7th along with Zen 2 .

Prices will be interesting for GPUs!

Get viewing reviews as soon as they pop up. do doubt £140 x570 boards will sell out and then the solid B450 MSI will fly off the shelf at £115 or have its price increased with demand . so be on the ball !

Riotoro G2 is re-branded Focus for £40 off lol

WD Blue 3D and especially Crucial MX500 have already enough history to tell that they aren't problem drives.
Unlike Kingston A400, which has had firmware issues, likely component lottery related performance variation etc. usual for drive assembled from what ever left over parts are cheap enough at the moment.
