Ok so the past few years I've had nothing but AMD but my trusty 939 4200+ x2 is showing it's weakness, it's not able to feed my 8800GTS the power it needs at the speed it needs and I'm looking to go C2D then C2Q once prices fall on those quads.

I have looked up a quick list and here's what I have found

Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 (2.13ghz) Socket 775 FSB1066 2MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor
£133
ASUS P5W DH Deluxe SKT 775 dual-core Core2Duo Conroe ready Crossfire 8channel audio ATX
£121
2Gb (2X1Gb) Corsair TwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC5400 (667), 240 Pin, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 4-4-4-12
£91
£345

I can always upgrade the ram at a later and I will not be overclocking but I'd like to know how much of an increase I'd get in performance with the above over my DDR1 system at the moment? has anyone else done similar ?

What are your thoughts?

Cheers!

I don't see the point in getting anything over an e4300 myself unless you need 4mb cache for editing/encoding yes a 6400 can do 3.7-3.8 ghz but is it
worth £40 for 400mhz more and a few c lower temp? i don't think so others may disagree.
Paired with a decent graphics card and ram 3.2 ghz is good
for a year so why not get the cheapest available 3.2-3.4 ghz capable cpu.
There's better ram around for the £90 mark also like geil 2gb pc6400 value kit.
Yes you will see a massive performance boost the intel core 2 duo is an amazing
processor.Personally i went for the ds3 a 4300 and geil value ram am very stable
at 3.2 ghz nice low temperature i just cannot see the justification of spending
£40-80 more for an extra 300-400 mhz. This only comes into play if your budget
conscious of course.Maybe do what i did and move to quad when a lot cheaper
as a stop gap solution the only choice IMO is the cheapest core 2 duo
don't listen to people who say get a 6300 it's much better etc it's not better in any way what so ever than a 4300 both will do 3.4 ghz easily at low temps with a decent cooler i'm sure somebody will be along to shoot me down soon claiming the 6300 is a speed binned chip runs cooler etc"which just isnt true" well it was but i think the current batches are true allendale not conroe.
There do seem to be a lot of sheep on this forum somebody says 6300 >> 4300
so it must be true.AND DONT BE TOO SCARED TO OVERCLOCK A CORE 2 DUO
They overclock with ease it's like they are designed this way almost it's fair
to say it will be perfectly safe and ok to overclock a 4300 on the stock cooler
to say 2.8 ghz without a care or worry in the world.

I'd stick with the spec you suggested, nice mobo, decent processor even if it doesn't overclock well when you get it..

But I would definately try and change the 5300 RAM to 6400 RAM.
