Upgrade Time for me. I use my rig for gaming, photo editing and anything else I fancy doing (odd bit of 3d modelling/midi sequencing) :)

Didn't really want to spend £1500 but the spec I through together below comes to that amount  Any ideas where I can change things around without sacrificing performace? Monitor and case I guess are the first things to look at but I figure I am going to spend most of my time in front of the screen so I want the best I can get...

My other requirement is to be as future proof as possible. Will this kit do that for me?

*OVERCLOCKED* Intel Core i7 930 2.80GHz @ 4.20GHz Max / Asus Rampage II Extreme Intel X58 Motherboard / Patriot Viper 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel DDR3 Bundle

Dell UltraSharp 2209WA 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor

Asus ATI Radeon HD 5850 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Lian Li PC-B25F Aluminium Midi Tower Case - Black

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (ST31000528AS)

Corsair HX 750W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-750HXUK)

Sony Optiarc AD-7241S 24x DVD±RW SATA Lightscribe Optical Drive

Thanks for any help!

Is it possible to overclock yourself rather than a overclocked bundle and choose a lower priced motherboard which can operate just as good.

Yes- I have my current rig overclocked so could do it myself in theory but am getting lazy in my old age :o

I haven't built a rig in 5 years so am a bit rusty...socket 939 here at the min still

How about this spec now then?

Will this be pretty much future proof at the moment?

Like I say, am after something that will be great for gaming/photo editing, quiet and allow me to upgrade it for the next few years keeping the core platform the same...

Fairly settled on the above spec now but still have some questions....

Is there a better 22" monitor around for that money?
Is there a better soundcard I should consider?

The above spec still comes in at around £1600. What sort of i7 rig could I get for £1000 including monitor?

Thanks for any advice, greatly appreciated. Like I say, it has been five years since I last built a system of any merit so a lot of reading has taken place!

The only other 3D 22" screen is this

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-075-VS&groupid=17&catid=949&subcat=

The only really difference i saw was the response rate in 2d viewing which is 5ms on this and 2ms on the samsung.

Also you could take a look at a i5 rig, as I think it would be quite tricky getting a i7 and a screen unless you give up on a lot of other parts. Anyways I gave a i5 spec a try and I hope it not to bad XD.

Asus ATI Radeon HD 5850 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £224.99

Intel Core i5 750 2.66GHz (Lynnfield) (Socket LGA1156) - OEM + Assassin's Creed II Game
£159.99

Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3R Intel P55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 Motherboard £133.99
Corsair HX 650W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-650HXUK)
£94.99

Geil Value 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (GV34GB1600C9DC)
£84.99

Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD103SJ) £64.99

Coolermaster CM-690 Dominator Case - Black
£59.98

CoolIT Eco A.L.C. High-Performance CPU Watercooler (Socket AM2/AM2+/AM3/LGA775/LGA1156/LGA1366)
£54.99

Sony Optiarc AD-7241S 24x DVD±RW SATA Lightscribe Optical Drive (Black) - OEM
£18.99

Subtotal £897.89

The Mobo comes with SATA 6GB/s and USB 3, And it quite abit under £1000 mark so you can make some changes were you need. Hopefully I didnt miss anything out Lol.

thanks for that. Not so fussed on the 3D aspect of the screen, it just needs to be really accurate in terms of colour reproduction and also great for gaming.

Does seem quite a lot cheaper to go i5....
