Just put together a a spec for my new build. Looking for someone with more in the know than me to just cast an eye over it to see everything looks okay, or what changes could be made?

Ah ok.
Just check that the psu is capable of what you're buying and if it has power connectors for that graphics card :)

get an ATi 4850 (better card and supports dx 10.1 and shader 4.1) or even a 4870 if you can swing it - also if you want you can add xfire later if you want to add second card (it will be 2x8 on p45)

also dont get 32bit vista get 64bit vista (better and will recognize 4gb of ram which 32bit doesnt)

I agree with getting 64bit vista, will allow you to use the full 4gb of ram you've spec'd. Also the 4850 is £26 cheaper and performs on the same level as the 9800gtx+, both are really good cards though. I'd also throw in a CPU cooler, overclock the E8400, should see 3.6ghz easy ;) The tuniq tower is really good and on offer this week.

You can also get a bigger hard drive for less cash

The F1 drives get a good name around here.

Just looking at the prices now and i'm tempted to go for a 4870, it sets me just over budget but it seems worthwhile.

Another concern is I cant quite decide on the E8400, overclocking isn't something that i've ever really dabbled in before, maybe i should just bite the bullit and ease myself into it, or maybe AMD would be a better option?

e8400 is fine for all games you will play, you don't really need to overclock it, just for benchmarks. anyway you will have that option to OC in future if you need to and can always ask here many can give you good advice

amd would not be a better option, dual cores have been ruling undettered for last couple of years. we were really spoiled with dual core, makes nehalem look like a tentative upgrade

ahh great, I think im all sorted to go pick it up on saturday morning then, cheers for the advise folks.

Should be quite an upgrade over the current Athlon 64 3000+, Radeon 9800 pro and 2 gig of ram that i am using presently ;)

Yea your deffo gonna have a nice surprise when you put this together,As stated by "lunarwolf" & "ro55o" i would slo go with the 64Bit OS (to benefit from the ram your using)

funnily enough a couple of months ago i was running more or less the same spec you have now "Athlon 64 3500+, Radeon 9800 256mb and 2 gig of ram" and i took a big hop skip and a jump to this beauty :)

Took me about an hour to put it all together and to install vista,I did a few stress tests with "ORTHOS" and everything is and has been stable ever since,I run Crysis,Far cry 2,Dead space,Mercenaries2,Pure,CoDWaW,NFS Undercover,Fallout3 and many more all on the very highest settings and my computer does not even hickup m8 :)

I was gonna go for the P5Q Pro board myself,But i wanted to go up into the new DDR3 mobo's, Let us know how it runs once you have it up and running m8 :)

Good luck and happy gaming with it ;)
