Hey peeps,Reyt my oldest son has been asking me to build him a new pc,So i have decided to build him one for his birthday in january after crimbo,So far i have this spec and i just wanted everyones opinions before i went ahead and bought it all :)

Now the ram was the main thing on my mind.
I was originally going to go with:

OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C5 Dual Channel Vista Gold Series DDR2 (OCZ2G8004GK)

But i see a lot of peeps have been having problems with OCZ ram and asus mobo's (Plus i aslo put corsair into the computer i have which i think it's amazing :) )

Also i didn't add an OS coz i have vista ultimate already lined up for him.

And it has deffo gotta be the antec 900 case,As he loves the look of my 1200 and when i showed him the 900 last week he jumped for joy ;)

Many thx in advance on your replies :)

looks nice, PSU may be overkill unless you want to have head room for second card

also wouldn't buy today if you plan on building this in jan, it is gonna sit in box, gather dust, eat warranty for no reason and basically depreciate

PS corsair ram is good but dominator fan is useless and blocks airflow, i removed mine. maybe get corsair ram without fan if you can get cheaper

Are you planning to get a large overclock on the E8400? If not then I'd just save some money and stick with some decent 6400 RAM.

I think it's actually a rumour that OCZ RAM has problems with Asus motherboards - or it's only with a certain Asus motherboard.
I have just ordered the OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel Platinum Series DDR2 RAM with the Asus P5Q Pro motherboard myself and I asked on the OCZ forums if that RAM will work OK with the Asus motherboard and was assured that it would.
It's really not surprising that you see people having problems with OCZ/Asus combos because they are probably the most popular.
You can see the thead I made on the OCZ forums here; http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?p=317918#post317918

Also, that PSU is overkill unless you plan on adding a load more HDD's and some power hungry GFX cards in Sli/crossfire.
A Corsair HX 520W would run that rig very easily. Or if you spend just a few quid more you can get the Corsair HX 620W Modular.

Swap the Antec 900 for the 300 and just buy a couple of blue LED fans for the front.

Honestly, don't get the 900, it doesn't have dust filters like your 1200 does, or like the 300.

I was thinking of sticking an extra card in at a later date,Or upgrading it for him to the 4870 x2 :) (when i have the spare cash)

Thx for the heads up about the fan too :)

I was thinking of overclocking to 3.5 (that was the only reason i thought of the arctic freezer pro) As for the Corsair HX 620W Modular a see a lot of people talking about that atm and i was also thinking of going for that just so i didn't have a load of wires everywhere :)

If i did go with that would the 620W power the rig with a 4870 x2 in??

I didn't know it didn't have dust filters,But i really like your idea with the 300 and the LED fans m8 ;)

Many thx for your replies peeps,Very much appreciated :)

Thank you for the link lunarwolf your a star :)

With the 4850 in the psu only needs to be 336w and when i can afford to upgrade his card to the 4870 x2 he only needs 475w,So i might as well get the :

520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-520HXUK)

Then there is enough voltage then to maybe stick a couple more hard drives in at a later date too :)

Thank you very much that has made my choices a lot easier and saved me a few quid in the meantime :) much appreciated :)

maybe check that some people are running ok with 4870x2 on 520w, coz i think that may be very close call. when i use calculator add fans, HDD, USB devices etc. i get about 550w needed.

anyway the calculator is to estimate. so you know that 750 is way too much, but i would not rely on calculator if it's a close call. I would rather have some1 who is actually running it, tell me it's ok and works in real life. it may be that for 4870x2 520w is enough, but it may be best to get a 600w so PSU isn't stressed to limit ;) best to be cautious and double check. best to spend an extra tenner and be safe then to have to buy a new PSU.

i have 1kw psu coz i wanted flexibility to run two cards, and didnt want a PSU at 850 running near capacity

Ahh good point,Maybe i'll stick with the 750w after all,Just incase,That way i never need to worry about getting another psu (for a while at least) ;) ty again :)

yeah or just get a corsair HX620, should be more than safe plus you get modular cables for tidy cable management and better airflow for cooling ;)

anyway ask if people are running a 4870x2 on 520w on forum or check signatures, it maybe that 520 is fine and am overly cautious. anyway no rush and best to make informed decisions

Stick with some decent 6400 RAM then. It'll be able to OC the E8400 to 3.6Ghz at stock settings and will most likely be able to push it to 4Ghz+.

I would go for the 620W modular PSU if you're thinking of getting a 4870x2 + more HDDs, etc.

is my set up any good??? IF NOT ELL ME A BETTER ONE

AMD Phenom Quad 9950 2.6Ghz, 4GB Corsair Dominator PC2-6400 DDR2 Memory, 1000GB Serial ATA II Hard Drive, nVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 896MB PCI-E, 22x DVD-RW, OCZ StealthXstream PSU, AMD 770 Motherboard
High Definition 8 Channel 7.1 Sound, 1000MBps LAN, Gigabyte Triton Chassis with 2 x 120mm Fans

leonard shall i list the problems
1. crap case
2.amd sucks at stock speeds copared to intel plus it can barely overclock
3.go for a corsair psu

oh and buy the way i think its a typo but there is no such thig as a
Gigabyte
Cosmos Dominator CM-690 Case 7 120mm fans

Asus P5QL Pro
Cooler Master 520w Modular PSU
4GB OCZ Platinum PC2 6400 800MHz
Scythe Infinty
Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX+
500GB Seagate
Samsung 22x Optical Drive

SO PHIL IS IS TO YOUR STANDARD!!!!

Lucky son nice pricey birthday present :). Spec looked nice change the case

I dont like the Antec 300,900, or 1200. Buy the Tuinq tower cooler and get a PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610 PSU. You could drop down to a E7400 and get the Asus 4870 GPU for £155

Change your HDD too a samsung f1 or western digital and go for either Tuniq tower, Noctua NH-U12P, or Thermalright Ultra-120A CPU Cooler + 1/2 fans for the CPU cooler, personally go for a biostar as Asus and ocz have had problems. Then it could be up to his requirements :D:D
