Hi,

Just wanted to check everything is ok with no mistakes on the following spec before I hit buy :)

- Is the RAM a good choice?
- Is the Akasa cooler good enough?

Can push it up to 2k if needs be.

Well you could go with the corsair XMS3 RAM. Oc's overclocked bundles use this RAM even with the i7 and it's slightly cheaper too. Money saved there you could add to the heatsink budget and go for a H-50-1 or the H-70 watercooling units.

Admiral huddy makes a fair point. Infact i'm sure many people will advise you drop to a lower i7 to save £s and upgrade other parts such as gfx card. Oh and just checking you realise you need windows 64 bit to use more than 4GB of RAM

Thanks, hmm I picked the 6 core for having the Intel AES included and speed / future proofing. Ideally I need it to last 3.5 years without upgrading. Fair bit more expensive I agree, but they seem to nicely out-bench the AMDs by a fair way.

Will be used for running a lot of virtual machines and gaming.

Thanks, I will change to that RAM. I was hoping to stick to air cooling rather than water, is there a better choice than the Akasa? Guess I should by some decent thermal paste to.
 
I only mentioned the H50/70 units as they are proving very popular. They are a closed loop so don't come with all the maintenance hassle of other watercooling units.

You can always play it safe by checking the spec of the Oc overclocked bundles any component they use they are confident in as they provide a warranty/guarantee for the overclock. I think they use arctic silver paste but most aftermarket heatsinks will include "half decent" TIM.
 
I think your safe with an AMD 1090T for a few years and more. Let's face it, there aren't as many applications and games that are pushing the technology to its limits like it once was and you save £400.

+1 for the 5870 btw. Nice card
 
I was looking at an identical build, you'll have to let me know how the 970 runs.

480/5870 will be down to personal pref, nvidia or ati.
