Looking to put a system together for a friend. OS, Keyboard, Mouse & speakers are not needed.

Will be gaming on a TV so 1080p. Not looking to play on MAX details but target is to get a good frame-rate (always above 30fps, hopefully 60fps)

Budget is £400. Here is what I have put together. Any advice?

Swap the Athon II X4 640 for a Phenom II X4 840 (free 200MHz clock boost)
Swap the 880GM-UD2H for a M4A78LT-M 760G (saves £10)
Swap the OCUK case with inbuilt PSU with the Coolermaster 430 with PSU - it costs £40 extra, but looks better and will actually be able to power the 6850.

So a typical respec would be this (plus your £10 DVD drive, obviously):

YOUR BASKET

1 x XFX ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £89.99
1 x AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 840 "95W Edition" 3.20GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £79.99
1 x Coolermaster Elite 430 Windowed Case - Black (with 500w Elite Power PSU) £64.99
1 x Asus M4A78LT-M 760G (Socket AM3) DDR3 Motherboard £49.99
1 x Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9) £43.99
1 x Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD103SJ) £39.98
Total : £380.94 (includes shipping : £10.00).

If you can afford the extra, bump yourself back up to the 6850.

However, ASUS mobo that will support Bulldozer after a BIOS flash; HD5850 - a very capable card and one that is faster than the HD6850 you originally specced; very good clocking ram; fastest mech HDD around :)

OP: here.

Yeah, my laptop is my one and only gaming rig, the only other stuff I have is an E6600 rig with a fried PSU and other possibly fried parts (the graphics card is terrible anyway).

I presently have 2p to my name, and don't see that changing any time soon, so I think a new build is a fair way away at the moment :P

Ouch, I feel you :(

I used to game on something worse than that - it's not the prettiest but it's tolerable - configs help a lot!

To give you an idea, this PC gets so hot that intel speedstep downgrades it to something like 133MHz pretty much constantly while I'm gaming.

I have to play my games on minimum settings, it hurts :(

At least its dual core :p

I played TF2 competitively on a P4 with no HT :(

I'm used to minimum settings now - made the upgrade all that much sweeter :)

Sweet, I have a PC here with two HT'd dual core P4s in it. That's right, two.

Pity the graphics card is an X1600 or something, and the case is the size of a matchbox with three very loud and ineffectual fans. Oh, and it's so old it struggles to run Windows XP now.
