Hi guys, I'm planning on doing a new build upgrade sometime later in the year as I'm looking to upgrade my monitor (wondering if I should jump to 4K now or just grab the best 1440p).

My old PC in my signature below has served me well for quite a while now (almost 7 years and it was about 3 years ago when I upgraded the gpu to a 6950) but I'm thinking it's time for a fresh build. My CPU especially needs an update and the 6950 is only good for medium settings for the most part.

As such, I'm scavenging parts and stuff so not all of the below will be necessary to purchase - I'm just putting them in to have a full build to look at. Would appreciate anybody pointing out the flaws or suggesting changes (CPU, MOBO and GPU) that will be better.

Price isn't that big a problem but would appreciate a little bit of savings :D

My usage: Heavy gaming (a lot of strategy, shooters and RPGs) without overclocking this time (may overclock later but I'm not feeling a huge real world performance so rather not fuss), multimedia function (will be connected to the NAS and be the control point for my house equipment) and future 3D rendering and programming (thinking of Oculus Rift development)

Monitor: Potentially 4K (if I can convince myself whilst looking at my bank account) but most likely I will be looking for 1440p GSYNC.

OS: Going to upgrade to Windows 8

Peripherals: Already have

The PSU you should swap to one of these,

YOUR BASKET
1 x SuperFlower Leadex GOLD 850W Fully Modular "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £109.99
1 x EVGA SuperNova G2 850W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply £99.95
1 x Seasonic M12II EVO Edition 850W '80 Plus Bronze' Fully Modular Power Supply £79.99
Total : £304.93 (includes shipping : £12.50).

The EVGA and Superflower are essentially the same unit.

Your RAM choice is great, but I am sure it will not fit under that giant heatsink so a all-in-one water cooler will be better to ensure fitment.

Thanks. I will swap out for the EVGA.

And yeah, the RAM clearance is something I was suspicious about but I googled image it and there's just enough clearance for them to fit. I just prefer air to water. Plus the Noctua is awesome.

I do want this machine to be as quiet as possible so I'm hoping a combination of Noctua and Fractal will do the job.

Thanks,

I will definitely check out the Gigabyte (wondering if it is quieter so I will check reviews) but what's the advantage of a x99? DDR4?

Bear in mind the SSD is already ordered (Samsung SSD performance is just something I can't ignore especially with the expected reliability of the new 850s) and the case will be a Fractal. So that's effectively a £200 increase in the cost. The x99 will be a £1800 (minus Noctua) vs a £1600 (minus Noctua)

the x99 supports ddr4, but the main draw would be that the haswell-e processors are hex/octa core (the 5820k in my spec is hex core)

spending 300 quid on a 512gb ssd is just crazy lol. the mx100 is half the price and you'd probably not notice the difference

How big a difference in performance difference will the 5820k be over 4790k? Bearing in mind I had a duo core for a long time...

And the reliability of the Samsung Pro range is worth the Premium (my 830 can testify). The spec difference is noticeable (I installed a cheaper crucial on my friends MSI laptop and compared it to my Samsung) just a second or half a second but it's noticeable.
