Got the itch to upgrade my rig.
Not been keeping up with all the new kit. so not really sure if my upgrade spec is a good idea or not.

Currently running:

Intel i7-4770K
Gigabyte Z87MX-D3H
32GB DDR3
250GB Samsung SSD
EVGA GTX 1080 SC.

Looking to swap the CPU, Mobo & RAM out.

What do you guys make of the following?

Intel i7-7700K
Asus ROG Strix Z270G mATX
32GB Corsair LPX (either 2x16 or 4x8)

old kit will be donated to a relative who starts university @ the end of summer

You still have a mighty spec - if it's predominantly used for gaming I wouldn't touch it (although clock the CPU if not already). It should be churning it's way through everything...

If you want to treat yourself I would get a bigger SSD - that would be it.

Or, perhaps monitor what do you have?

EDIT: And I would consider a Ryzen 1700 over an i7 7700K if you were intent on doing a new build.

I think you just have the upgrade itch, This is a beast of a system, And not sure you'll gain much if you upgraded, I'd wait a little longer

I'm running a pair of 24" 4K monitors
Forget the monitor upgrade too then :)

Has AMD now finally caught up to intel?

Yes, very much so.

Ryzen is a welcome relief - finally competition for INTEL and falling prices.

The Ryzen 7 1700 is probably the most comparable to the i7 7700 (even the 1600) - it has 8 cores and 16 threads. And with each BIOS update/software optimisation these CPUs are proving to be the go to CPU for future proofing systems (longevity of socket) and streaming, gaming rendering etc...

It's getting over its teething issues, like all early platforms, but it's a fantastic bang for buck CPU (they all are).

I'm not saying the i7-7700 is bad CPU - it's just that the Ryzen 1700 with more core/threads is a beast of a CPU for similar money.

Plus, the whole Ryzen range are unlocked...

I love you guys.

I think I'll stick with my current build, will add a larger SSD (as it is needed) & get myself a new pair of shoes.

Still leaves me to build a cheap PC for my wife's nephew.

Sound decision (but then I would say that :D)

Check out the MM Forum - there are some amazing value bundles to be had that would suit the core of your nephew's build perfectly.

Otherwise the Ryzen 1500/x (or 1600 if flush) would be a great CPU to build around coupled with a b350 Mb...
