Spec Comparison Question - Pure Processing Power

How much of a difference would you likely expect to see going from these two workstations:

Intel P4 3Ghz
2Gb DDR 3200 (@566Mhz?)
566Mhz FSB

to

Intel Core Duo 2 2.4Ghz (1066Mhz)
4Gb DDR2 8000 (@ 1066 Mhz)
1066Mhz FSB

Basically I am curious as to how much quicker a system would be going from a 566Mhz bus to 1066Mhz bus, especially with the same 1066Mhz speed DDR2 n CPU. Any thoughts?

There will be quite a significant increase in performance, especially with multi-tasking. I noticed that so much when I went to Core 2 Duo, right now im sat on a 2600+ Athlon XP cause my Core 2 rig is without a graphics card and this thing is so slow when doing multiple things I notice it dramatically cause of the move back to single core.
 
Big difference, you'll love it. Get the thing overclocked though.

It's more to do with the efficiency of the core 2 over the netburst, not fsb or anything like that, though that plays a part.
 
Actually if you have a single process that can be done in a single clock, the P4 will be faster. However that is very specific case, and unless that is what you use your PC for the Conroe will absolutely destroy the P4.
 
I will be using CPU intensive programs, now I know this sounds noobish but with the ability to multi-task would I be able to thus run 2 CPU intensive programs concurrently or would I be better off just leaving one major CPU intensive program running at a time?

Isn't it the opposite, as a 2.4 GHz Conroe easily performs quicker that a 4GHz P4...?

The Conroe can do larger instructions in one clock, and can even combine two smaller instructions. However this is not always possible. So a situation where you have uncombinable small instructions only, and one process, that the Pentium D can handle in one clock, a 4GHz will beat a 2.4GHz clocked chip. Only in that unique circumstance however. Literally grasping for straws... I'll try and dig up an example of over optimised code that would do this.

EDIT Looks like I am misreading (from PC Perspective)

So assuming worst case scenario with only 4/3 execution a 2.4GHz will equal a 3.2GHz. With 5/3 execution 2.4Ghz will do 4GHz

Again with the massive Caveat that this is an artificially creatied circumstance eliminating other advantages of the Core 2 Duo.
