Would have thought a dual core would be better for games? As for the rest, pretty much what I had thought off. I'm trying to convince him to build his own but he want to buy everything pre-built, just showing him how much more he can get for his money.
 
Dual core isn't necessarily better for games, it just perhaps isn't leaving the extra core(s) idle, if you can clock a quad to the same speeds as the dual core then they will, in theory, perform exactly the same. However if it is purely for gaming and the games aren't coded to take advantage of more than two cores then something like an E8400 and PC8500 Ram for overclocking would be better.
