If the poster asks for a base unit (hardware) and doesnt say to include windows, then why bother?......

Anyone who's building their own system is quite capable of sorting out their own OS disk.

why is everyone specing machines forgetting windows?

Because it is generally accepted practice that people come here and ask for hardware solely, if they want software then it should be explicitly stated in the requirements. Windows also isn't the only OS available, Linux being available free(in certain distros) as another viable alternative, it requires a bit more knowledge but it is getting more user-friendly all the time and given some of the people I know using it then it can't be all that hard. :)

Strectching it on the PSU there aint ya?......

I don't think so particularly, it is a good PSU from a good brand and Conroe and the 7900gs are both less demanding in power requirements than their predecessors. Ideally I'd put in a bigger PSU to make 100% sure but there shouldn't be any problems. You can run it through a PSU calculator and I make it to be around 230w for the whole system. :)

You can, again a bit more knowledge helps(more than I have) but something like WINE allows you to play Windows games or software I believe and there are other options like VMWare(although that costs money), not all games work perfectly but the software support is improving constantly. You can also buy special Linux games. It isn't a perfect solution but all I'm trying to do is point out that it is quite possible to play games under Linux.

Then you believe wrong i'm afraid.

Only use Windows myself, but know enough Linux users to know it very possible to play lots of games, just not all of them, but that all depends what you personally need from an OS.

OCUK forums isnt just gamers.

Used that calculator for mine, came out at 395W, so hoping my enermax is being efficient and keeps that way.

EDIT: Think i accounted for planned bits last time, did it as accurate as i could this time, and i get 356W on the calculator.

ok cheers semi-pro waster for the spec, ill have to look into :)

going to have to have a word with my friend and see if he is willing to spend that much as it is top end budget, but sure does look nice, makes me wish i waited a few months and spent £350 on a decent system rather then my 64 3000 and X800XT. :(

Wasnt my spec, but thanx... ;) lol

I'm happy with mine, does everything i need, but i'd like a conroe to... :D

Takes forever to encode movies etc compared to buddie's conroe, but for gaming my 50 - 60 fps isnt going to seem or look any slower then his 100 - 200 fps.

I keep my XP trimmed down, so single core cpu is fine for me.

I run 2 19" 1440x 900 screens, AV, Outlook, MSN, Style XP, Object Dock, and run games without lag.

Friend forgot he alt and tabbed the other day on my PC and had dark messiah running in the background then loaded up GTA:SA and started playing, never realised till it became apparent there was like a half second delay with the mouse, but the actual FPS was still fine, not bad for a single core cpu if you ask me.
