My canadian friend has finally decided to come away from the consoles back into the PC domain. He's willing to drop £855.

(17:02) Love Jam:
how much you dropping on a pc
(17:03) Donald:
i would say prob $1500
i was gonna try and go lower but i figure why do that and have to upgrade again really soon

Should he wait until christmas sales and the new Nvidia cards?

Well there usually aren't post-christmas/january sales from the etailers in this market - OCUK and others just carry on with their 'this-week-only' or similar promotions. So there is no point in waiting for them.

If he wants to wait for the high-end fermi cards (which may or may not appear at the end of jan, and these will only be the top card/s), then the current ATI cards will be in better supply and at better prices, and there will be realworld information as to which (58xx or Fermi based) is the better card to go for.

We can't spec him for this price for the obvious reason that he won't be buying from here and cost of components vary considerably with what country you're in.

I'm also unaware of Christmas sales outside of the high street shops.

offtopic/ Hammer=screwdriver is an excellent philosophy, and your sig makes me sad that I've been away from folding for over a week :(

Slacker! You're going to get stomped if you're not careful!

EDIT: @ OP... you'll also need to give more detail: is it a full setup, including monitor, keyboard, etc?

Whats import tax like on buying electronics from the UK if you live in Canada? It may be an appreciable part of the budget.

You would be looking at something like the following

1hliv.jpg

Comes in at £657.90 inc delivery etc, comes in under budget giving you room to add a second graphics card for crossfire, SSD drive etc

But why not buy the second card at the same time if he has the money? And I think that he should pay 3 pounds more and get the Asus HD5770 as it has 3 year warranty.

You could have two of the Asus cards ast3r mentioned and have £60 left over

Asus ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card + Colin McRae Dirt 2 Full Game + Ruby Doll
