Hi all

Currently I have:
AMD 3700+ SD skt 939 @ 2.6Ghz on stock cooler
Asrock Dual Skt 939
2gb DDR Ram
X1800xt 256mb
440W PSU (can't remember brand, not a cheapo one anyway)

Right, im a webdesigner, so im looking at using the comp as a semi webserver comp, I do multimedia editing, photo's video, 3d design occasionally and some gaming.

in my head im thinking of going quad core, Q6600, and a 8800GTS with vista & 4gb's of ram. The overclocking the pants of the 8800 and Q6600

What do you people suggest? can someone spec me? I realy want to keep the price down as my money doesn't grow on tree's. Thanks

You've said plenty about your intended use (which is great!), but I think the guys won't be able to spec properly for you unless you could let them know what parts you plan to keep out of what you currently have.

ie: Will you need a new monitor/case/mouse/keyboard/hard-drive etc etc.

sorry, my mistake.

I have a keyboard, mouse & monitor, HD's DVD-Rws etc, even got an PCI SBlive 7.1 card. I can deal with all that stuff, its just ram, cpu, gfx, I dont know of types & brands I'll need. I've just looked around and saw some of the components and benchies.

I have some Hd's i'll be keeping, but will be moving over to sATAII in the near future.

p.s. also, I play css, C&C3, Bf2, ET:QW and hopfully any new games which tickly my fancy. My current comp can't really cope with CSS at the min,the cpu just isn't up to it, and i like my eye candy :P

How many PATA ports do you need? It determines which motherboard to get.

Something like this would do very nicely if the money's there and the number of PATA ports is sufficient:

One of the most usefull upgrades id consider for web design is going dual screen (if your not already), helps heap loads having design and code on seperate screens.

defo davidb,

i did some of my coursework as a website and having dual monitors helped no end. i find it great when doing any kind of editing/ assignment as i can have internet explorer on one sire and work on the other etc...

just wondering how do the Q6600's stack up?

I currently only have a 17'' at home, going to change soon tho, I love using my 2 19''s at work :P

i can pick out monitors tho, i got the response time, max res etc... its just pc componenets im a little behind on.

isn't 4gbRam ideal for vista?....

my blessed little single core sandy hated vista, and css ran like a dog lol, would i be better off with an 8800gtx? or is the 8800gts all gravy?

would it be sufficient to get a copy of vista 64 & an extra 2GB's of the ram?

 Does that mean you'd skip the upgrade except for the RAM and call it a day? That would work and would do rather well or programming. If you want to keep most of the current system I suggest upgrading to a dual core CPU. An X2 3800+ is just £39.94 right now.

no sry, i wrote that wrong ;O)

i meant, including the upgrade suggested, could i just add an extra 2gb's of the RAM and vista to make it a nicer upgrade?
