Hi, I am helping my Mum put together a new build. The PC will need to be able to good at running multiple apps for photo editing mostly, but with the scope for a bit of Video Editing if needed.

This is not going to be a full time work horse, but she wants good performance. Can anyone give me an idea of minimum spec required please, preferably if you have a bit of experience using CS4, Lightroom etc.

Thanks

anyone? For example is a Phenom x4 955 on a £60 -£80 board with 4gb RAM going to be as good at moderate photo editing as an i5/i7 set up?

Have you tried unlocking your Phenom? as you have a pretty decent system atm and yeh tbh there is not much difference between them unless the programs you use take advantage of the i7's extra threads.

its not my pc, Im helping my mum out. Her budget is about £550 but this is for a full setup, excluding monitor, keyboard & mouse. she does not want to recycle anything out of her old box as much of it is 7/8 years old. I have figured out a couple of set ups within budget, one with Phenom and one with i5, but i have no idea which would perform better at these type of tasks.

BTW yeah i did try unlock my 550 but it wont have it, I got it showing 3 cores for a short time but it kept restarting after 2-3 minutes and giving me a Failed Overclock warning on reboot

hmm I would say go Phenom as in the future you can upgrade to the AMD 6 core 'Thuban' Cpu unlike the i5 (1156) which will more than likely not get any 6 core...plus AMD are cool :p
