Cat5 etc only recommend 100m or most only guarantee 100m.

So can anyone recommend another way, perhaps fibre to anetwork at a remote office roughly 150 meters from where the broadband line is in the house?

Basically, someone's asked me if I can connect their PC in their house to a small network in their workshop, which is about 150m down the garden - it's definitely more than the CAT5 100m limit.

Is it possible to hook up a switch at any point so you have a 50 metre and a 100 metre length or not?

Personally i'd just run in the CAT 5. I think i may even be tempted to "double jumper" the pairs to try to improve the loop resistance issues

I dont think this will help because the 100m limit is not so much to do with signal attenuation but the propagation delay effecting collision detection.

You could always try using fast ethernet and if it does work, drop the link to half duplex and failing that 10mbps.

Alternatively you could look at picking up some cheap fibre adapters on ebay..

Just buy a couple of single mode fast fibre converters and a run of single mode fibre, put it in a hosepipe for a bit of extra protection, job done. Prices are low enough now you may as well buy gigabit convertors actually....
