I'm looking for 2 servers with the minimum requirements:
1Ghz processor, 512MB RAM, network interface card capable of 100megabits per second, 500 GB of backing storage - expandable to 1 TB.

Cheaper the better! Is there any particular brands/models I should have a look at? Any help much appreciated.

ummm a bit more info is required, what roles are these servers actually going to be undertaking? wouldnt recommend scrimping if this is business related, it's a false economy.

What are you planning on serving? music, email? Running vista or server software.
Sounds like you need nothing more than a £200 jobbie.

Or a NAS.

if its for home then i guess your not looking for 'proper' server hardware...since it's not designed for the home environment, and therefore is: big, noisy, etc.

if this is purely file storage, just buy a nas.

if you want the flexibility of a proper operating system then just look to build a sff system.

It's for a computing project, I just need to find two servers with those minimum requirements and compare them. I had a google but I don't know enough about servers to be able to find what I'm looking for - hence why I asked you guys for some advice...

so you want us to do your homework for you?

those 'minimum' specs you have quoted as well below any 'entry level' server i can think of.

type servers into google and im sure you will end up on two major vendors fairly close to the top of the list.

search for entry level servers, pull the specs, and... well... compare them as you will.
