change the GPU to the OcUK GeForce 8800 GT 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail to bring you to just under £300 when you use the free shipping offer

save more money by:
-getting a smaller hdd (not recommended as the saving doesnt justify the amount of hdd space lost)
-getting a e2xxx series cpu (not recommended ,the e5200 is the best budget chip at the moment)
-getting a DVD drive over a DVD writer (again not recommended as its a pain not begin to write dvds or cds when the need arises)

all bracketed text is my personal opinion

I understand from your original post that you don't need a motherboard or a graphics card. Also, I give you 4GB RAM, because it doesn't cost much more, so better value for money. The E8400 is an awesome processor so it comes highly recommended!

Thanks for your replies.

Unfortunately no one gets the prize, because you didn't give me the spec I asked for.

Mattf121 was closest...but I didn't ask for 4GB...only 2GB...the pc will be running XP 32bit so 4GB is not supported.

Pastymuncher wins for suggesting the E8500...good call...no prize for you though, because you didn't spec the RAM, HDD or DVD.

Still haven't decided on exact final spec, but it will prolly be E8500 CPU, 2x1GB PC2-6400, 500GB SATA HDD, + cheapo DVD. As stated before, I already have the barebone and GPU sorted.
:)

I didn't know what was best...that's why I asked! Was my original post confusing? I thought it was quite clear and concise.

I can pick a couple of faults with that lot. The E8600 is not worth an extra £53 for 170 mhz. The E8500 is a far better buy and they have been E0 steppings lately. Mine was only last week. The PC2 6400 ram will soon run out of steam when overclocking (if required). A PC2 8500 kit is a far better choice. The DVDRW is ok though.

Here is what i would go with.

E8500 £140.99.

G.Skill 2GB DDR2 PK PC2-8500C5 £32.89.

LG GH22NS30 22x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM £16.44.

Samsung SpinPoint F1 640GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD642JJ) A fantastic £45.81 on this week only.

Total price £236.13.
