A teammate of mine wants to upgrade and get a new PC for i37 LAN.

As the title says his budget is £600 max.

He already has Mouse, keyboard, headset and monitor.

**Quick Update - He already has bought Windows Vista Premium

Hard drive or DVD drive? Since he has a monitor I'm just guessing he may have one or two of these lying around, just to get an extra few quid for the GPU :-)

What sort of games, what resolution?

nothing of note worth salvaging from the old pc tbh.
Call of Duty 4 mainly, he plays it competitively so he its set up with all settings and the resolution low.

4870 should be nice and fast, and DDR3 memory :-)

Alternatively, since he's a frame rate nut... 260 should give a few more FPS at the expense of dropping to DDR2

If he'd prefer intel, you'll probably want to look at the E7400 with a P45 board
Edit: Yeah, a P5Q with an E5400 comes in at about £10 less and the E7400 £10 more than using the above DDR2 setup. Slightly cheaper when you compare to the DDR3.

My personal choice (obviously, since I have it xD) would be the tri-core, any upgrade from a 4870/260 isn't likely to give him a much better frame rate at low res with these mid range CPUs.
