Hi folks,

Been researching bits and bobs for a new pc for a while now and thought i'd try and get some advice here.

I'm looking to build my first pc in 5 years. I've bought a copy of Windows 7 in anticipation so I don't need an OS. I also have a decent keyboard/mouse, monitor and optical drives.

I'll be using the machine mainly for browsing the net, music, a little video editing (got my first HD cam a while back), media streaming to an Xbox and gaming (though I fully accept that for this kind of budget I won't be getting anything overly futureproofed).

I've been reading a lot about Core i5 and they seemed a good mid range choice. I was planning on coupling it with a GTX 280 but notice that OCUK don't sell them for some reason. And maybe those bits would come in over budget anyway?

Thanks for your help

Alex

a little over 650 but well well worth it, gl

Later on geta 90-110 quid SSD, put ur OS and other bits on there and enjoy!

^^ hard to beat that, pretty good build for the money. Maybe think about a dx11 card from the ati 5*** range, future proof it a little better.

Thanks very much for the replies. I don't need a DVD burner so that should save me a bit.

Is there any reason behind choosing an ATI card rather than Geforce? Cheapness? Is performance comparable?

Was originally looking at some Gigabyte motherboards which came in slightly cheaper than the recommendations - any thoughts on quality?

i chose the msi for the oc genie which will oc it to about 3.3 or above i saw that you said you hadoptical but didnt know if it was dvd rom or not i chose ati as it is dx11 and about as good as a 4870 in some a bit etter the other guy chose 4890 as it is similar in price but better performance but isnt dx11

Does anyone have an opinion on hard drives? At the moment i have a smaller hard drive that windows and programs are installed on. And a larger one for all my media (vids, pics, music). I do this partly because i'm under the impression that adding and removing loads of media over time will slow down windows. Is that the case or would a simple defrag fix it?

Basically, how do i stop Windows slowing down over time?

Thanks

derfagging on a regular basis is a good idea but the set up you have if they are decent drives is a well proven one as if you windows gets corrupt and dies you do not lose you data if it is imortant what i would say to do is get a new windows drive if it is odler for spead and they are quite cheap now nd also maybe use the other drive as a radi 1 of the first to have a back up drive it is a little bti slower but proven reliability

Ordered!
I've taken the spec you suggested above Daniel but swapped the case for an Antec 300 ultimate gaming as my brother has one and recommends it highly.

So fingers crossed the assembly will go smoothly. Thanks to all for your help =]
